Mario Galaxy Movie Hits Digital Just 6 Weeks After Theaters

Universal is rushing The Super Mario Galaxy Movie to digital storefronts on May 19, barely six weeks after its theatrical debut. The film is still 2026's top earner but looks unlikely to crack a billion.

Six weeks. That's how long The Super Mario Galaxy Movie lasted as a theater-exclusive before Universal decided it was time to start selling digital copies. Universal confirmed today that the Illumination and Nintendo animated sequel will be available to purchase on digital storefronts starting May 19, with 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray editions following on June 16.

The film opened in cinemas on April 1 in most territories. A turnaround this fast feels like Universal looked at the box office, saw the ceiling, and decided to start capturing home revenue before interest fades entirely. I don't blame them. The Galaxy movie has pulled in $942 million worldwide, which still makes it 2026's top earner by a wide margin, but it's clearly not going to match the $1.36 billion that the first Super Mario Bros. Movie earned back in 2023. Getting it into living rooms quickly is the smart play.

For comparison, the original Super Mario Bros. Movie had a roughly similar digital window, but that film was still climbing when it made the jump. Galaxy's theatrical run feels like it's already plateauing, and the gap between $942 million and a billion is looking harder to close by the week.

What's in the Box

Digital purchases will include over an hour of bonus content, though no deleted scenes. The featurettes cover the expected ground: a making-of documentary called "Next Level," individual spotlights on the cast pairings (Mario and Luigi, Peach and Rosalina, Bowser and Bowser Jr., Toad and Yoshi), a breakdown of the film's Easter eggs, and a segment on composer Brian Tyler's process for adapting the franchise's game music into a cinematic score.

The Easter egg featurette, "Secrets of the Galaxy," is probably the one most fans will actually watch. If you've been on any Nintendo subreddit since April, you know people have been freeze-framing every background detail trying to catalogue references. Having the filmmakers walk through what's intentional versus what's coincidence should settle a few arguments.

The Tyler segment interests me too. Whatever you think of the film's pacing or story, the score was one of the things that clearly worked. Hearing how he approached translating music that millions of people associate with a very specific gameplay feeling into something that functions in a two-hour narrative is a interesting creative challenge.

One detail I find telling: critics were mixed to negative on the film overall, and Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto reportedly said the critical reception surprised him. A $942 million gross on a $110 million budget means the audience showed up regardless, but the speed of this digital release suggests Universal isn't counting on much more theatrical momentum. When a studio is confident a film still has legs, they let it run. When they're not, they pivot to home sales.

The broader Nintendo movie pipeline continues to fill out. A spinoff film, expected to center on Donkey Kong, is confirmed for 2028. Jack Black, who voices Bowser, has suggested a third mainline Mario film could arrive in 2029. And Nintendo's live-action Legend of Zelda movie is still on track for next year. Nintendo is building a cinematic universe on the back of these films, and even if Galaxy didn't hit the same heights as its predecessor, nearly a billion dollars on a $110 million budget gives them every reason to keep going.

If you're holding out for a physical copy, the Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD editions land June 16 with the same bonus features. No streaming date has been announced yet, so if you want to watch it at home before it eventually hits a subscription service, buying is currently the only option starting May 19.
