Diablo 4's Switch 2 Port Is a $70 Code in a Box

Blizzard's action-RPG is reportedly coming to Switch 2 in mid-September, but the physical version won't even include a cartridge. You're paying $70 for a box with a download code inside.

Paying full price for a physical game and getting a slip of paper with a code on it is one of those industry trends that never stops feeling insulting. According to a new leak, that's exactly what Blizzard has planned for Diablo 4 on Switch 2.

Reliable leaker billbil-kun, writing for Dealabs Magazine, claims the action-RPG will arrive on Nintendo's console on either September 15 or 18 at a price of $69.99 / £62.99. A physical edition will exist, but it won't contain a cartridge or even a Game-Key Card. It's a box with a download code. That means no resale, no lending to a friend, no shelf value beyond the cardboard itself. If you're buying physical specifically because you want to own something tangible, this version defeats the entire purpose.

I keep waiting for the industry to stop doing this, and it keeps getting worse. A code-in-a-box release at $70 is a digital sale wearing a physical disguise. It exists so retailers can stock shelves and so publishers can capture the segment of buyers who still walk into shops. The consumer gets nothing extra for their trouble. No disc, no cartridge, no actual media. At that point, just buy it on the eShop and skip the trip.

What's actually in the package?

That's the frustrating part: we don't fully know yet. The $69.99 price matches the Age of Hatred collection on other platforms, which bundles the base game with both the Vessel of Hatred and Lord of Hatred expansions. But billbil-kun says it's unclear whether the Switch 2 version includes Lord of Hatred or ships as the base game alone. If Blizzard is charging the same $70 without the DLC, that's a significantly worse deal than what PlayStation and Xbox players can get for the same money on the PlayStation Store right now.

Diablo 4 originally launched in June 2023 on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S. It reviewed well, sitting at an 88 average on OpenCritic, and has received two major expansions since. A Switch 2 port has been rumoured since early 2025, and former franchise head Rod Fergusson acknowledged the possibility in an interview that same year. His concern wasn't hardware power but live-service logistics: "I think the challenge is less around the hardware and just about how we… you know, live services on Switch have been a little bit challenging in the past." That explanation rang hollow then, given that Fortnite and Warframe managed just fine on the original Switch, and it rings hollow now.

Billbil-kun speculates the official announcement could come during Gamescom later this month, where Xbox already has a booth planned for its 25th anniversary celebrations. A reveal a few weeks before launch would track with how Blizzard has handled similar announcements in the past.

Diablo 4 arriving on Switch 2 is good news in isolation. Playing it handheld on a device that can actually handle it, unlike the Steam Deck's current pricing and availability issues, is a genuine draw. But the code-in-a-box approach at full price is the kind of anti-consumer packaging that deserves to be called out every single time it happens. If you're going to sell a physical product, put something physical inside it. A $70 box containing a receipt for a digital download is not a physical release. It's a prop.

The Switch 2 itself already costs £395.99 / $449. Asking new owners to pay another $70 for a game that's been out for three years, potentially without its latest expansion, and without even a cartridge to show for it, is a tough sell. Blizzard can still make this right by confirming the DLC is included. But the box situation? I'm not holding my breath on that one changing.
