MvC2's Most Infamous Fighter Returns in Marvel Tokon
Magneto, one of fighting game history's most iconic characters, is back in a Marvel fighter. Arc System Works revealed him alongside Green Goblin and Carnage during today's State of Play.

If you played Marvel vs. Capcom 2, you don't need anyone to explain why Magneto matters. The character defined an entire era of competitive fighting games, and now he's returning to the genre in Arc System Works' Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls, revealed today during Sony's State of Play alongside Green Goblin and Carnage.
All three join Doctor Doom as part of the Knights of Doom team, bringing the confirmed roster to 17 out of 20 characters. Magneto's kit leans into ranged control, hurling environmental objects at opponents that shatter into debris and power up his subsequent abilities. It's a different flavour than his MvC2 rushdown dominance, but seeing him manipulate the entire battlefield feels like a fitting evolution for a character whose fighting game legacy is practically mythological. Green Goblin rides his glider for high-speed aerial pressure with Pumpkin Bombs and Razor Bats, while Carnage transforms his limbs into bladed weapons and places enemies in a "symbiote-infested" state that lets him drain health through guards. According to the PlayStation Blog post, Magneto is voiced by James Arnold Taylor, Green Goblin by Steve Blum, and Carnage by Kellen Goff.
The reveal also introduced the game's main antagonist, The Champion of the Universe, an Elder who threatens to destroy Earth unless its fighters can satisfy him in a tournament. Classic setup, but Arc System Works has earned enough goodwill with Guilty Gear Strive's presentation that I'm curious to see how the Episode Mode handles it.
With only three roster slots left, all belonging to Ghost Rider's team, the full picture is nearly complete ahead of the game's August 6 launch on PS5 and Steam. I'm glad Magneto made the cut. A Marvel fighting game without him would have felt like a deliberate omission, and from the footage shown today, Arc System Works clearly understands the weight that character carries with the FGC.
