Level-5 Revives Cult 3DS RPG Snack World for Switch 2
Level-5 has announced Snack World: Reloaded, a full remake of the 2017 3DS dungeon-crawler that most Western players never got to touch, heading to Switch 2, PS5, and PC.
Most Western players have never heard of Snack World. That's not a dig; it's just the reality of a game that launched on 3DS in Japan in 2017 and didn't reach global audiences until a Switch port in 2020, by which point the original hardware was already a footnote. Level-5 is betting that changes now. During today's LEVEL-5 Vision 2026 Craftsmanship event, the studio announced Snack World: Reloaded, a full remake of Snack World: The Dungeon Crawl - Gold, coming to Switch 2, PlayStation 5, and PC via Steam. No release date was given.
Level-5 CEO Akihiro Hino described the project in terms that went well beyond a simple remaster. "We've made major updates to the gameplay, controls, and story, to the point where it almost feels like a brand-new game," he said during the showcase. That's a bold claim, and the announcement trailer keeps its cards close, presenting upgraded visuals with all footage marked as in development. What we can see is a clear aesthetic shift toward something denser and more detailed, described by Level-5 as feeling like stepping into a beautifully crafted diorama. Whether the underlying dungeon-crawling loop has been meaningfully rebuilt won't be clear until we see actual gameplay.
A New Perspective on an Old Story
The most interesting addition is a brand-new mode built around Chup, the protagonist from the Snack World anime and manga. In the original game, Chup functioned as an ally to your custom avatar as you ran errands for the Kingdom of Tutti-Frutti's king and Princess Melonia. The remake flips that dynamic, letting you play through the story from Chup's perspective directly. It's a smart way to give returning fans a reason to replay a game they already know, while giving newcomers a more character-driven entry point. Whether the two modes feel meaningfully different in practice is the real question, but the intent is there.
to Level-5 for actually bringing this one worldwide from the jump. The original Snack World was Japan-only on 3DS for three years before the rest of us got a look at it. Announcing Reloaded for a global simultaneous release on Switch 2, PS5, and Steam suggests the studio has learned something from that rollout. It also fits the pattern Level-5 has been building since Fantasy Life i found real traction last year; the studio is clearly in expansion mode, and Snack World is the next property they're betting on.
The timing too. Switch 2 is shaping up to have a varied launch window, and Level-5 dropping a remake of a niche cult title alongside bigger names is an interesting play. It won't be the headline act, but for the players who did put time into The Dungeon Crawl - Gold on Switch, this is a surprise. Hino confirmed development is going well, which is about as much certainty as you get from a studio that operates on its own timeline. Expect more concrete details, including that missing release window, well down the road.
