Halo's Remake Runs on Steam Deck and ROG Ally

Halo: Campaign Evolved is a faithful yet modernized remake of Halo: Combat Evolved's campaign, rebuilt from the ground up.

That's how Microsoft describes the game in its Game Pass listing, but what caught my eye this week wasn't the HD visuals or the three new missions. It was a short clip posted to the official Halo X account showing Campaign Evolved running on a Steam Deck. Not a dev kit demo, not a "we're looking into it" hedge. Just the game, on a handheld, looking clean.

According to a Q&A posted on Halo Waypoint, Campaign Evolved is fully Steam Deck Verified. It's also optimized for Windows handhelds like the ROG Ally, meaning this isn't a case of "it technically boots" portable support. Halo Studios has done the work to make sure the game runs properly on smaller screens and lower power envelopes. For a franchise that spent two decades as the poster child for big-screen console gaming, seeing Master Chief on a seven-inch display is a genuine shift.

I grew up playing Halo on a CRT with three friends crammed onto a couch. The idea of running a full remake of that campaign on something I can take on a train is the sort of thing that would have sounded absurd in 2001. And honestly, it's a smart move from Halo Studios. The Steam Deck install base keeps growing, and portable PC gaming on devices like the ROG Ally and Legion Go is carving out real market share. Shipping with proper handheld optimization from day one, rather than patching it in six months later, shows the team understands where PC gaming is heading.

Portable and Cross-Platform

The handheld support pairs with another feature that's been confirmed alongside it: four-player online co-op across all platforms. Campaign Evolved supports cross-play between Xbox, PC, and PlayStation, so the full co-op experience works regardless of hardware. Cross-play should be standard by now, but I'll still give credit when a studio ships it at launch rather than dangling it as a post-release promise.

Campaign Evolved launches on July 28 as a day-one Game Pass title, available on Cloud, Console, Handheld, and PC through Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass. It's also coming to PS5, marking the first time a mainline Halo game has appeared on PlayStation hardware. The remake includes HD visuals, refined controls, an expanded arsenal of weapons and vehicles, new enemies, and three additional missions beyond the original campaign.

For anyone on the fence about which version to grab, the handheld angle might tip the decision. A full Halo campaign you can pause and pocket is a different proposition than one tethered to a desk or TV. Halo Studios clearly built this remake to go everywhere, and six days from now we'll find out if the portable experience holds up as well as that teaser clip suggests.
