Is GTA 6 About to Kill Fable's 2026 Launch?
Fable may be fleeing GTA 6's shadow. Jeff Grubb says it's been pushed internally, and the maths on the calendar doesn't look great for Microsoft.
GTA 6 has a November 19 release date, and apparently that single number is enough to send Microsoft into a quiet panic about one of its biggest games of the year.
Giant Bomb's Jeff Grubb said on his Game Mess Mornings podcast that Fable has been "pushed internally" at Microsoft, with GTA 6's launch window cited as a major factor. His read: if Fable slips past November 19, it lands in December, a month where games go to be quietly forgotten. At that point, Microsoft might just hold it until 2027 rather than burn a release in the industry's deadest retail slot. "So while Xbox will have a lot of games coming out this year," Grubb said, "that's one that there's still a big question mark around."
Playground Games pushed back this morning. The official Fable account on X replied to a fan with "we're excited to welcome you to Albion in Autumn 2026!" which is about as pointed a non-denial denial as you can get without naming Grubb directly. Whether that holds is another matter. Autumn covers September through November, and the closer you get to Rockstar's launch date, the narrower that window becomes.
I'm not surprised this is happening. GTA 6 is going to consume the oxygen in every room it enters, and dropping a massive open-world RPG within weeks of it would be a tough sell even for a healthy franchise with an established fanbase. Fable is a reboot that still hasn't shown us a release date or a price. Microsoft's Xbox Games Showcase on June 7 is where we'll likely get real answers; Gears of War: E-Day is already confirmed to appear, and Fable almost certainly will be too. As spotted on X by IdleSloth, the rumour has been circulating since the weekend. Fable is currently set to launch on Xbox Series X and S, PS5, and PC.
