Last God of War on Disc? Laufey Physical Copy Confirmed
Santa Monica Studio has confirmed God of War Laufey will be available on disc, all but guaranteeing a launch before Sony's January 2028 deadline to end physical game production.

"We can confirm God of War Laufey will be available on disc."
One sentence, posted by Santa Monica Studio on X, and it immediately became the most well-received thing any PlayStation-adjacent account has said in weeks. The studio dropped the confirmation while promoting its upcoming San Diego Comic-Con panel on July 24, where game director Ariel Lawrence, head of creative Cory Barlog, and cast members including Deborah Ann Woll, Christopher Judge, Jack Quaid, and Perlina Lau will discuss the game publicly for the first time since its reveal.
The disc confirmation lands in the middle of a firestorm. Sony announced earlier this month that it will cease production of new physical PlayStation games starting January 2028, and the backlash has been relentless. Every PlayStation social media post since has been flooded with angry replies. Santa Monica Studio clearly saw what was coming and got ahead of it, posting the disc assurance directly beneath its Comic-Con announcement. It worked. Unlike virtually every other recent PlayStation-related post, the replies were largely positive.
But there's a bittersweet edge to the celebration. As one commenter put it: "The last SMS Physical Release. End of an Era." They're probably right. Unless Sony reverses course, any future God of War game after Laufey will be digital-only. For a franchise that debuted on PS2 and has shipped millions of physical copies across five console generations, that stings.
What the Disc Tells Us About Launch
The confirmation carries a second implication that's hard to miss. God of War Laufey still has no official release date, but if it's getting a physical release, it almost certainly has to ship before January 2028. Persistent rumours point to a February or March 2027 launch window, and the amount of gameplay Sony showed during its June 2026 State of Play presentation supports the idea that the game is deep into development. A Comic-Con panel with this much cast involvement doesn't happen for a game that's two years out.
I think we're looking at a release date reveal before the end of the year, likely at a future State of Play rather than Comic-Con itself. The panel's description focuses on behind-the-scenes insights and performance capture, not the kind of framing you'd use to drop a date.
Meanwhile, Rockstar Games recently confirmed that physical versions of Grand Theft Auto 6 will just be a code in a box, not an actual game disc. That makes God of War Laufey one of the last major PlayStation exclusives to ship as a proper physical product. Sony has said PS5 games already published before the January 2028 cutoff can continue to have copies printed, but no new titles will get discs after that point.
The bigger unresolved question is what happens when PS6 arrives. Will those PS5 discs work on next-gen hardware through some kind of optical drive attachment? Microsoft is reportedly testing a system to digitize physical Xbox game libraries ahead of its next console. Sony hasn't announced anything similar. For anyone who's spent years building a physical PlayStation collection, the disc confirmation for Laufey is welcome news, but it also highlights how much Sony still hasn't addressed about the transition.
God of War Laufey is a PS5 exclusive following Faye's journey through the afterlife, with Santa Monica Studio describing it as a side story rather than a prequel. The studio has said it still has "many more stories" to tell about Kratos. Whether those future stories ever come on a disc is looking increasingly unlikely.
