God of War Faye Spin-Off Tipped for June State of Play
A God of War prequel starring Kratos' late wife Faye is reportedly headed to Sony's June 2 State of Play, alongside Marvel's Wolverine and potentially more PlayStation exclusives.
A gelatinous cube, a talking sword that might be Merlin, and the dead wife of the angriest man in gaming. If the rumours around Sony's upcoming State of Play are accurate, the next God of War game is going to be deeply weird, and I mean that as the highest possible compliment.
Sony confirmed on May 20 that its summer State of Play will air on Tuesday, June 2 at 2 PM Pacific, promising more than 60 minutes of updates, announcements, and gameplay reveals. Insomniac's Marvel's Wolverine is the confirmed headliner, with Sony pledging a closer look at Logan's combat ahead of the game's September 15 launch on PS5. But according to reliable insider Nate the Hate, as reported by WCCFtech, the show will also feature a God of War spin-off starring Faye, Kratos' wife whose death sets the entire 2018 game in motion.
The details that have leaked so far paint a picture of something far more adventurous than a simple Norse mythology expansion. Because Faye dies before the events of God of War (2018), this would necessarily be a prequel. Previous reports indicated the game could also feature Týr, the Norse God of War freed by Kratos and Freya in Ragnarök. More intriguingly, Faye and Týr are said to be joined by unusual companions, including a "gelatinous cube" and a talking sword reportedly tied to Merlin, with the story spanning multiple Middle Eastern and Asian mythologies. Santa Monica Studio shifting away from the Kratos-centred formula is a creative risk, and the mythology-hopping premise sounds like exactly the kind of swing that could revitalise a franchise that just wrapped up its Norse saga.
Sony also filed trademarks that appear connected to the project, adding another layer of credibility to the leak.
Beyond Wolverine and Faye
Nate the Hate suggested the State of Play could include additional PlayStation exclusives beyond the two confirmed or heavily rumoured titles. He couldn't confirm whether Naughty Dog's Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet would appear, but described the overall event as "good" while cautioning fans to keep expectations grounded. A separate insider, Millie A, offered a more bullish take on X (formerly Twitter): "There's 'temper expectations'... and then there's what's actually about to happen at State of Play. Maybe don't miss this one."
Two insiders with seemingly different reads on the same show is interesting. It could mean the lineup is strong but narrow, heavy on quality reveals for a specific audience rather than a broad crowd-pleaser. Or it could just be a difference of opinion. Either way, Sony needs this one to land. The June State of Play effectively replaces the old E3 press conference slot, kicking off a week that continues with Geoff Keighley's Summer Game Fest on June 5 and Microsoft's Xbox Games Showcase on June 7.
As for what else Sony could realistically show, the cupboard isn't bare but it's not overflowing either. Guerrilla Games' co-op title Horizon Hunters Gathering has reportedly started playtesting. Sucker Punch just shipped Ghost of Yotei and its Legends multiplayer mode. Housemarque recently released Saros. Bend Studios and Firesprite both had projects cancelled, making them unlikely candidates. A third-party console exclusive from a Japanese or Chinese developer remains plausible, though nothing concrete has surfaced.
I'm excited about the Faye spin-off in a way I haven't been about God of War since the 2018 reboot reveal. Kratos' story across the Norse saga was excellent, but it also felt like it had a clear endpoint. Building a prequel around Faye, a character we only ever knew through other people's memories of her, opens up storytelling space that a Kratos sequel simply wouldn't. The talking sword and gelatinous cube details sound absurd on paper, but God of War has always been at its best when it leans into mythological strangeness rather than playing it safe. Sony's State of Play streams live on YouTube and Twitch on June 2 at 2 PM PT.
