29 Years of Graphics, Undone by One FF7 Rebirth Mod
Modder Stepheroth is cramming the original 1997 polygon character models into Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth's gorgeous open world, and the contrast is beautiful chaos.
Somewhere in the uncanny valley between 1997 and 2026, blocky Cloud Strife is standing in a field of photorealistic grass, his rectangular hands gripping a Buster Sword that has more polygons than his entire body. It's magnificent.
Modder Stepheroth has been sharing progress on a project to replace every character model in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth with their original PlayStation 1 battle models. Not the pre-rendered cutscene versions, not the field models; the chunky, pointy-fingered combat models that defined an entire generation of RPG fans. Tifa, Sephiroth, and most of the main cast are already done, with only Nanaki, Cait Sith, and Zack Fair still to go. Early cutscene testing shows some leg animation quirks, but in gameplay the models apparently work near-perfectly.
I love everything about this. There's something deeply funny about watching a character who looks like he was assembled from about fourteen triangles walk through Rebirth's meticulously rendered environments. Square Enix spent nearly a decade rebuilding Midgar and the wider world with obsessive detail, and Stepheroth is cheerfully stuffing PS1 action figures into it. The visual dissonance isn't a flaw; it's the entire point. Those old models carry a specific nostalgia that Rebirth's beautiful redesigns, for all their fidelity, simply can't replicate.
No release date has been announced for the mod yet, but Stepheroth has been posting steady updates across the last couple of weeks and the pace suggests it won't be long. The modder's other work is available on NexusMods and Ko-Fi for anyone who wants to follow along.
