8 Years After Its Teaser, Elder Scrolls 6 May Finally Move
Xbox's new CEO wants Bethesda's biggest franchises moving faster. Eight years after that teaser, Elder Scrolls 6 might actually be a priority now.

Eight years ago this month, Bethesda dropped a 36-second teaser for The Elder Scrolls 6. A camera panned over some mountains, a logo appeared, and then... Nothing. No gameplay, no setting reveal, no release window. Just years of Todd Howard occasionally confirming the game still exists in interviews, which at this point a hostage proof-of-life than actual communication.
That drought might be ending. According to a report from The Information, Xbox CEO Asha Sharma is pushing to accelerate development on Bethesda's two flagship franchises, The Elder Scrolls and Fallout, along with Halo. Reuters corroborated that Sharma "plans to increase spending to accelerate development of new Xbox titles from its most successful franchises," naming Fallout and The Elder Scrolls specifically. Three sources with direct knowledge of the discussions told The Information that Elder Scrolls and Fallout are "two particular areas of focus for Sharma."
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella and CFO Amy Hood have reportedly approved Sharma's plan to spend more on major games in the fiscal year starting July, though the budget isn't locked in yet. The timing tracks with everything else happening inside Xbox right now. Bloomberg reported significant layoffs are expected later this month, Sharma announced an "Xbox Reset" days ago, and The Information's report adds that Microsoft hasn't ruled out spinning Xbox into a wholly-owned subsidiary, a structure that could make the division easier to sell or operate as a joint venture.
None of this tells us when Elder Scrolls 6 actually ships. Approving a budget for faster development and having a finished game on shelves are separated by years of work, and modern RPGs at Bethesda's scale take four to five years minimum. The last mainline Elder Scrolls was Skyrim, which is approaching its 15th anniversary. Fallout 4 came out over a decade ago. Even with corporate pressure from above, "accelerate" could mean these games arrive in 2029 instead of 2031. I'm glad someone at Xbox is finally treating these franchises with the urgency they deserve, but eight years of silence followed by a budget memo isn't exactly a victory lap.
The report also doesn't clarify whether "accelerating" means fast-tracking mainline entries like Elder Scrolls 6 and Fallout 5 specifically, or whether spin-offs and remasters could fill the gap. A Fallout 3 remaster has been rumoured for some time, and Oblivion Remastered already launched last year, with both a standard and Deluxe Edition recently rated by the ESRB for Switch 2.
