Forget the Cow King, Diablo 4 Players Now Hunt a Cow God

Defeating the Cow King wasn't the end. A mysterious quest item called Prime Rib has Diablo 4's secret hunters convinced something much bigger is waiting.

It took three years, two expansions, and an absurd chain of cryptic clues, but Diablo 4 players finally cracked the secret cow level earlier this week. The Cow King is dead. The community celebrated. And then they read the loot drops and immediately spiraled into an even deeper mystery.

The cow level itself plays out roughly how you'd expect from Diablo tradition: bipedal cows with poleaxes, a towering Cow King boss, and a mythic helm reward called the Cow King's Crown with intentionally absurd affixes like "Wednesday: Chance to reduce enemy Cooldown (No)" and a Saturday bonus requiring over 10 weeks of consecutive Crowd Control in Helltide. Classic Blizzard nonsense. But the Cow King also drops an item called Prime Rib, categorized as a rare quest item. Its flavor text reads: "Such a prime cut would be a worthy offering to anyone, even to a god." That single line has the secret-hunting community convinced the cow saga isn't over. As covered by Kotaku, current theories point toward fishing mechanics or the sea, drawing on clues buried in developer interviews going back years. YouTuber LoatheBurger, who helped lead the charge to the cow level in the first place, is already deep into the next phase of the hunt.

I love that Blizzard built something this layered. The cow level required items only obtainable in Lord of Hatred and a Horadric Cube combination that nobody stumbled into by accident. The fact that it might just be the midpoint of a longer quest chain is exciting, and it's the sort of long-game secret design that most studios wouldn't bother with in a live-service title. If there really is a Cow God encounter waiting at the end of this, Blizzard will have pulled off one of the best community-driven mysteries in ARPG history. Players are currently combing through every scrap of flavor text and environmental detail on Cow Island, where 12 cows stand in a circle around human skeletons gazing at a cow statue. According to the Fextralife Wiki, the community is cataloguing every lead they can find.
