Both Baldur's Gate 1 and 2 Reportedly Being Remade

It's not just Baldur's Gate 2. Reports suggest both classic BioWare RPGs are being remade, with original co-lead designer Kevin Martens back on the project.

Not one, but both of BioWare's original Baldur's Gate RPGs are reportedly getting the full remake treatment. According to a report from PC Gamer, Wizards of the Coast is actively working on a Baldur's Gate 2 remake, with original co-lead designer Kevin Martens already involved in the project. A source familiar with the plans also indicated that a remake of the first Baldur's Gate is likely in the works too, with the two projects potentially being developed concurrently.

Martens has been within the Wizards of the Coast family already, working as a creative lead at subsidiary Archetype Entertainment on the upcoming sci-fi RPG Exodus. His return to the franchise he helped shape is a strong signal that Wizards is serious about this, and I covered the BG2 side of this story yesterday. But the addition of a BG1 remake changes the picture entirely. Remaking both games together rather than years apart makes obvious sense; Baldur's Gate 2 is a direct sequel that originally let you import your character from the first game. Launching a remade BG2 without a remade BG1 alongside it would feel incomplete, especially for the wave of players who discovered the series through Baldur's Gate 3 and have never touched the originals.

Wizards of the Coast responded to press inquiries with a standard "we do not comment on speculation or rumour," so nothing is confirmed. No details on engine, scope, or release window have surfaced either. Both games already received Enhanced Editions in 2012 and 2013, which got a patch as recently as February this year, so they haven't been abandoned. But full remakes are a different proposition entirely, and given how massive both games are, this won't be a quick turnaround. Wizards of the Coast president John Hight has previously confirmed that a Baldur's Gate 4 successor is planned too, though Larian won't be the studio behind it. Remaking both originals while a new studio figures out how to follow BG3 is a smart play; it keeps the franchise visible and gives newcomers a proper on-ramp. I'm excited about this one, because if Wizards commits the resources these games deserve, this could be the definitive way to experience two of the best RPGs ever made.
