Arc Raiders Swaps Skill Points for Mystery Rewards

Embark Studios is removing bonus skill points from Arc Raiders Expeditions starting July 7, replacing them with temporary blueprints and small Raider Token payouts in the name of helping new players catch up.

For the first three Arc Raiders Expeditions, bonus skill points were the carrot. They gave veteran players a meaningful head start after each wipe, a tangible reward for grinding through damage thresholds. Starting with the fourth Expedition on July 7, Embark Studios is pulling that carrot entirely and replacing it with temporary blueprints and 150 Raider Token payouts per completed departure objective.

According to Embark's announcement, the new reward structure still ties progression to dealing damage, scaling from 5,000 to 100,000 damage across five tiers. Each tier grants a random blueprint from a curated list of high-end items, plus the token payout. The catch: those blueprints are temporary and reset when you depart on your next Expedition. So the permanent takeaway from a full clear is 750 Raider Tokens, which are spent on cosmetics in the shop.

That's a steep downgrade from bonus skill points, and I think Embark knows it. The studio framed the change as a new-player accessibility measure, writing: "We understand the frustration of new players that are only now starting to do their Expeditions. We need to find the right balance of rewarding our veteran players but also give new players fair and fun ways to catch up." The logic makes sense on paper. Veterans stacking extra skill points across multiple Expeditions created a widening gap that made the game feel punishing for anyone joining late. But swapping a permanent, progression-altering reward for cosmetic currency and temporary items doesn't feel like balance; it feels like the reward just evaporated.

The response on Reddit has been predictably cold. Without something meaningful to chase, veterans are questioning why they'd bother engaging with Expeditions at all. This is a game that lost nearly 80% of its Steam player base earlier this year and shifted away from monthly updates in May, moving to bigger content drops twice a year. Embark can't really afford to give its remaining players a reason to skip the one recurring event that keeps the loop alive.

The fourth Expedition window opens July 7. Embark says finding the right reward balance is "a continuous effort," with more updates to come.
