It seems that Sony is taking a unique approach to leadership with the announcement of Hermen Hulst and Hideaki Nishino stepping in as joint CEOs of PlayStation. This move, set to take effect on June 1, 2024, has stirred up quite a buzz within the gaming community.

Hermen Hulst, previously known for his role as the head of PlayStation Studios, will now be heading the newly formed Studio Business Group. In this capacity, Hulst will oversee all first-party games and PlayStation IP in TV and film. With a background as a co-founder of Guerrilla Games and involvement in popular franchises like Killzone and Horizon, Hulst brings a wealth of experience to his new position.

Expressing his enthusiasm, Hulst shared on Twitter, "It’s a true privilege to be asked to lead the new Studio Business Group for Sony Interactive. I’m excited to continue working with incredibly talented teams and studios to deliver unforgettable game and entertainment experiences."

On the other hand, Hideaki Nishino will be taking on the role of CEO of the Platform Business Group. In this capacity, he will be in charge of PlayStation console hardware, accessories, technology, the PlayStation Network, and third-party relations. Nishino brings his experience as the former SVP of Platform Experiences to his new role, promising to deliver exceptional experiences to gamers.

Nishino expressed his gratitude, stating, "I am honored to be appointed such an important role alongside Hermen. By working more closely together, we will be positioned to build incredible experiences for an ever-expanding audience now and in the future."

Both Hulst and Nishino will be reporting directly to Sony Interactive Entertainment chairman Hiroki Totoki, who had been serving as PlayStation’s interim CEO since Jim Ryan's departure. Totoki emphasised the strategic focus on deepening engagement with existing PlayStation users and expanding experiences to new audiences through the leadership of Hulst and Nishino.
