Cancellation of New Twisted Metal Game Amidst PlayStation Job Cuts

PlayStation has recently announced sweeping changes, including the dismissal of approximately 900 staff, the closure of its London studio, and workforce downsizing at its affiliate company, Firesprite, among numerous other studios. Alongside these significant alterations, the gaming giant also scrapped some in-progress games, including a much-awaited relaunch of Twisted Metal. According to Bloomberg's Jason Schreier, a live-service Twisted Metal title had been in the works but unfortunately met the chopping block during the company-wide cancellations.

Twisted Metal, absent from the gaming scene since its reboot in 2012, was not only for gamers but had also infiltrated the small screens via a television series adaptation available on the Peacock streaming platform. News of a second season was also announced in December during The Game Awards. PlayStation Studios head Hermen Hulst, in an internal memo obtained by Bloomberg, acknowledged the significant number of cancellations taking place within the company. He commented that while great ideas exist, they do not always translate into successful games, and that initial project plans sometimes take a different direction due to industry or market shifts.

Over the recent months, PlayStation has noted a trend in cancelling numerous live-service games, with titles like The Last of Us and Insomniac’s Spider-Man series being a part of this cut back. The latest casualty in this line, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, fell short of the company’s targets, as per Warner Bros.

What’s the public sentiment about PlayStation's decision to pull the plug on the live service Twisted Metal game? Is it indicative of the future of live service games?
