US Files Lawsuit Against Apple for Smartphone ‘Monopoly’

Apple is facing a major legal battle as the US Department of Justice filed a lawsuit against the tech giant, accusing it of unfairly dominating the smartphone market and restricting competition. The lawsuit highlights various areas where Apple allegedly hinders competition, including cloud streaming game apps.

One of the major allegations in the lawsuit is that Apple has blocked developers from offering cloud gaming apps on the App Store, forcing users to upgrade to more expensive hardware to access visually impressive games. This move, according to the lawsuit, aims to maintain Apple's monopoly power in the market.

The lawsuit argues that cloud gaming apps allow users to enjoy high-quality gaming experiences on smartphones without the need for expensive hardware upgrades. By not allowing such apps on the App Store, Apple is limiting consumer choice and stifling competition.

While Apple announced in January that it would permit game streaming apps, including services like Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, the lawsuit suggests that these concessions might not go far enough to promote fair competition. In an interview with The Verge Xbox head, Phil Spencer, expressed concerns about the limitations imposed by Apple on Xbox Cloud Gaming on iOS.

Despite denying the claims made by the Department of Justice, Apple is facing increasing pressure to comply with regulations that prevent tech giants from abusing their dominant market position. In the EU, Apple has already had to make concessions due to the Digital Markets Act, which aims to prevent gatekeepers like Apple from stifling competition.

As the legal battle unfolds, it's clear that the fight over cloud gaming apps is just one aspect of the larger conflict between Apple and developers seeking fair.
