Ubisoft has finally unveiled its highly anticipated free-to-play first-person shooter, XDefiant, after several delays. As gamers gear up for its release on May 21 on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC, Ubisoft has provided insight into its in-game purchase philosophy to give players a glimpse of what to expect.

In a recent blog post, Ubisoft reassured players that XDefiant will not feature any pay-to-win mechanics. While some non-cosmetic content can be purchased with real money, the publisher emphasizes that all gameplay impacting content is also unlockable through in-game challenges. This ensures a level playing field among the community, with fairness being a top priority.

For example, the DedSec faction in the Preseason can be either purchased or unlocked through an in-game challenge by acquiring 700k XP. This approach aims to balance the accessibility of content for all players, regardless of their spending habits.

Ubisoft’s primary goal with XDefiant is to provide players with a rewarding gameplay experience. The game will offer free Battle Pass rewards, in-game daily and weekly challenges, Ubisoft Connect challenges, weapon mastery, and community participation rewards. By participating in matches and completing challenges, players can unlock a variety of customization options that reflect their dedication to the game.

According to Ubisoft, every match, victory, and defeat contributes towards unlocking content through the Battle Pass or challenges. This system encourages players to engage with the game consistently, knowing that their time and effort will be rewarded with exciting new content.

XDefiant will follow a seasonal content model, with a new season launching every three months. Each season will introduce additional content, including a new faction, three new weapons, three new maps, and a 90-tier battle pass. Year 1 of XDefiant will see four seasons, each expanding the game’s universe and offering fresh challenges for players to tackle.

During the Preseason, players will have access to 14 maps, five modes, and 24 weapons, including 44 attachments. The game will feature five factions from popular Ubisoft series, such as Far Cry, Ghost Recon, Splinter Cell, The Division, and Watch Dogs. Players can look forward to unlocking or purchasing the Dedsec faction, which will be exclusive to those who meet the requirements.
