Roblox, the popular online gaming and creation platform, has recently announced its backing for California Senate Bill 933 (SB 933), aimed at addressing the concerning issue of AI-generated inappropriate and harmful images of children. As a platform dedicated to providing a safe and positive online environment, Roblox sees the protection of children on its platform as a top priority.

Artificial intelligence (AI) has shown immense potential for creativity and safety enhancements, but Roblox emphasizes the need for responsible and careful use of such advanced technologies. A report from the Stanford Internet Observatory in 2023 uncovered disturbingly large amounts of explicit and abusive images of children embedded within widely used AI image generators, highlighting the ease with which such harmful content can be created and circulated. This revelation has shed light on the urgent need for stricter regulations in this domain.

In order to maintain a safe online space, Roblox has outlined strict guidelines against certain types of content on its platform. The company employs a combination of internal and external measures, including the use of PhotoDNA, to prevent the upload and sharing of inappropriate material. Roblox also advocates for broader legislation prohibiting the possession and distribution of AI-generated explicit and abusive images of children.

Roblox has publicly voiced its support for California Senate Bill 933, applauding the efforts of Senator Aisha Wahab and the Senate Public Safety Committee in spearheading this legislation. The company believes that SB 933 will play a crucial role in enhancing protections in the fast-evolving technological landscape, ensuring a safer digital environment for children.

This legislative amendment extends the existing laws covering child pornography to also encompass AI-generated content, reflecting Roblox’s commitment to proactive measures for safeguarding children online. By standing alongside California law enforcement agencies and child safety advocates, Roblox aims to contribute to a more secure and responsible online community for all.
