Xbox head Phil Spencer recently shared his thoughts on the recent layoffs at Activision Blizzard, shedding light on the reasons behind the unfortunate events. In an interview with Polygon, Spencer highlighted the challenges facing the gaming industry and the need for Xbox to maintain profitability.

Spencer expressed concern over the lack of growth in the gaming industry, stating, "It's a little bit of both. But I'll say the thing that has me most concerned for the industry is the lack of growth." He emphasized the need for publicly traded companies in the industry to show growth to investors, which often leads to scrutiny on the cost side when revenue growth is stagnant.

Spencer also pointed out that Xbox is a business first and foremost, with a responsibility to shareholders and executives to remain profitable. He acknowledged the impact of layoffs on individuals in the industry and emphasized the importance of creating a stable environment for career growth.

When discussing Xbox as a brand, Spencer highlighted the shift in gaming preferences among younger audiences. He mentioned that the traditional concept of gaming on a console connected to a TV is evolving, with younger generations preferring access to games through various platforms and applications.

"So for Xbox, our brand pivot – as we attract and maintain relevance with a younger audience – is 'Xbox is a place where I can find the great games I want to,'" Spencer explained.
