Discord to Launch Sponsored Ads this Week

Exciting news for gamers and Discord users as the platform is set to launch its new Sponsored Quests feature this week. This new offering, as revealed in a blog post last month, will allow users to earn in-game items by completing quests while their friends watch on Discord.

A recent report by WSJ suggests that the program will be rolled out within the week, with paid promotions becoming a permanent fixture on the platform, appearing in the bottom left corner of users' screens.

Players can earn rewards by streaming themselves completing an in-game task from the advertiser, with at least one friend watching. Discord is even expanding its team by looking to hire more than a dozen people for ad-sales positions to support this initiative, despite the platform's previous stance on not relying on ads like other social platforms.

Discord Ads

For users concerned about ads, Discord reassures that they will have the option to turn off the ads in their settings. The platform has primarily generated revenue through its Nitro subscription service, which offers perks like the ability to upload large files for a monthly fee ranging between $2.99 and $9.99.

According to sources cited by WSJ, Discord's revenue has seen a significant increase, reaching $600 million annually, marking a quadruple growth from its 2020 earnings. However, the platform faced challenges earlier this year when it had to implement workforce reductions, laying off 17% of its employees, attributing the decision to a rapid expansion of its workforce. These cuts, the largest in Discord's history, followed a smaller layoff last summer.
