Zelda Movie Wraps Filming, Locked In for May 2027
Sony confirmed at CinemaCon 2026 that filming on the live-action Legend of Zelda movie is done, with the May 7, 2027 theatrical release still on track.
Filming on the live-action Legend of Zelda movie is officially done. Sony Pictures confirmed the news during its CinemaCon 2026 showcase last night, as reported by IGN, while reaffirming the May 7, 2027 theatrical release date.
Sony didn't show any new footage, images, or real details about the film during the presentation, which is a little frustrating given how little we've actually seen. The only official looks so far have been a handful of set photos Nintendo released last November when production kicked off in New Zealand. Benjamin Evan Ainsworth plays Link, Bo Bragason plays Princess Zelda, and Wes Ball is directing. Shigeru Miyamoto is co-producing alongside Avi Arad, and after its theatrical and home entertainment windows, the film will stream exclusively on Netflix.
Wrapping principal photography just over a year before release is a solid sign. There's obviously a mountain of post-production ahead; a live-action Zelda is going to lean heavily on VFX work, and that pipeline is where timelines tend to slip. But having cameras done now gives the team a reasonable runway to May 2027. After the Super Mario Bros. Movie proved Nintendo could translate its IP into box office gold, there's real pressure on this one to deliver something that feels like more than a corporate synergy exercise. I'm cautiously curious rather than excited; Nintendo and Sony have been almost absurdly secretive about this project, and at some point soon they need to show us what this thing actually looks like. A teaser trailer before the end of 2026 feels like the bare minimum.
