Walmart Banned Forza Horizon 6's Viral Nightmare AI
Forza Horizon 6's most feared AI racer has been "banned" from Walmart stores. The bowieknife99 saga has spiralled from in-game annoyance to full-blown internet phenomenon.
A fictional AI driver in Forza Horizon 6 just got banned from a real chain of retail stores. Walmart Canada Gaming posted on X that bowieknife99, the game's most infamous drivatar, is no longer welcome at any of its locations. "You already have to worry about running into your ex at Walmart," the account wrote. "You shouldn't worry about bowieknife99 running into you outside of Forza Horizon 6."
The fact that a real retailer is playing along with banning a fictional racing AI tells you everything about how far this meme has travelled. What started as players sharing clips of one absurdly aggressive drivatar has snowballed into something that now involves official brand accounts across the industry. The Xbox UK account kicked things off on Bank Holiday Monday with "Happy Bank Holiday Monday to everyone except bowieknife99," and the floodgates opened from there.
Since then, the pile-on has been relentless. Xbox Game Pass joined in. The Rayman account wondered about the "shadowy figure." The Crew's social media replied "hoping we'll be spared," which is a fun bit of self-awareness from Forza Horizon's closest competitor. Even Pragmata's account got involved, posting that its character Diana was disgusted by mentions of the nightmarish foe. A verified account claiming to be the drivatar has appeared on X, though nobody has confirmed whether it's connected to the real player whose data spawned the AI.
In Forza Horizon's drivatar system, AI racers are modelled on the driving behaviour of real players. Somewhere out there is a person whose aggressive driving style created bowieknife99, but so far, nobody has identified them. The mystery is half the fun, and I hope it stays that way. The moment someone puts a face to the name, the meme loses its best quality: the idea that this unknowable force of chaos is just out there, terrorising lobbies, accountable to no one.
Walmart issuing a fake ban on a racing game's AI driver is exactly the kind of absurd corporate social media stunt that usually makes me roll my eyes, but this one actually lands because the bit is so specific and so committed. When your game's AI villain is getting engagement from grocery chains, you've accidentally created the best marketing Forza Horizon 6 could ask for.
