4 Days Early: Tomodachi Life Is Already Online

The ROM for Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream is circulating online four days ahead of its official Switch release, with players already running it through the Ryubing emulator.

"It only takes one store and a fan with early access to put things in motion for a leak."

That line from Nintendo Everything sums up exactly what's happened here. Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream, the first entry in the series since the 3DS original in 2013, doesn't launch until April 16. It's already playable.

As first spotted on Reddit's r/GamingLeaksAndRumours, the ROM is out and spreading. Players running Ryubing, a fork of the now-discontinued Switch emulator Ryujinx, are reporting the game works. The authenticity of the dump has been vouched for by multiple users in the thread. There are also sellers on eBay offering physical copies at inflated prices, which points to the most likely explanation: a retailer broke street date, someone grabbed a copy, dumped it, and it was online within hours.

Nintendo Everything notes that the leak is unlikely to cause the kind of damage a story-heavy game might suffer. Tomodachi Life is a life sim with no real narrative to spoil. That doesn't make this any less of a headache for Nintendo, though, and anyone who wants to go in fresh should probably stay off social media for the next few days.

Nintendo Has Been Here Before

This is becoming a pattern. Pokemon Legends: Z-A leaked roughly three days before its October release last year, with the ROM cracked and circulating well ahead of launch. Before that, physical copies of Donkey Kong Bananza surfaced on eBay days early, though in that case spoilers and a ROM dump didn't follow. This time, both the physical copies and the dump are out simultaneously.

Nintendo's response to emulation has historically been aggressive. The company went after Yuzu in 2024, alleging the emulator enabled around one million downloads of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom before release. Ryubing, as a fork of the already-shuttered Ryujinx, is operating in legally murky territory, and whoever is responsible for the ROM dump itself is in a far worse position.

Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream is the third entry in the broader Tomodachi series and officially launches for Nintendo Switch on April 16.
