Cigarettes Spark 2026's Most Promising Anime Romance

A forty-something salaryman crushed by his boss. A young supermarket cashier with a secret punk alter ego. Cigarettes as the thing that brings them together. Smoking Behind the Supermarket With You, adapted from a manga that started life as a webcomic on X (formerly Twitter), is set to air on Crunchyroll in July 2026, and its premise alone makes it one of the most interesting anime of the year.

The story follows Sasaki, an overworked office worker whose one bright spot is the smile of Yamada, a cashier at his local supermarket. When she vanishes from her station one night, Sasaki steps out for a smoke break and runs into her outside, dressed down and going by a different name: Tayama. She's punky, casual, and chain-smoking. What starts as an awkward encounter behind the store slowly builds into something far more interesting than a standard will-they-won't-they setup. This isn't really a love story. It's about two people from different worlds finding a kind of platonic belonging in each other, which honestly feels like a more hook than most romance anime manage.

The age gap between the two leads will raise eyebrows, but the source material leans into that tension deliberately. Rather than framing it as romantic, the manga explores how connection can exist outside the usual boxes society draws around relationships. Sasaki and Tayama bond over smoking first, then over something harder to define: the feeling of being seen by someone who doesn't want anything from you. I'm curious to see how Asahi Production handles that nuance in animated form.

A first trailer is already out, and the animation looks sharp. Yamada's character design in particular pops with color and personality. The studio appears to be treating the material with care rather than leaning on easy comedy beats, which is exactly what this story needs to land.
