Skip Age Verification? PlayStation Cuts Your Voice Chat
Sony is telling PlayStation users to verify their age or lose access to voice chat, messages, parties, and even Discord integration. The rollout starts in the UK and Ireland, with global expansion planned later this year.
If you turned on your PS5 in the UK or Ireland this weekend, you may have been greeted by a message you weren't expecting: verify your age, or lose the ability to talk to anyone on PlayStation.
As first reported by Push Square, Sony Interactive Entertainment has begun sending notifications to players informing them that age verification will be required "later this year" to keep using communication features. That includes voice chat, text messaging, joining parties or group sessions, Discord integration, and even broadcasting gameplay to YouTube or Twitch. An email obtained by Insider Gaming confirms the plan is global, though Sony hasn't given a specific date for the wider rollout.
I covered this story from a different angle yesterday, but the full scope of what gets locked behind verification is broader than the initial reports suggested. According to Sony's own FAQ page, players who don't verify will also lose access to in-game user-generated content and any connected third-party communication experiences. Games, trophies, and the PlayStation Store remain unaffected, but everything social gets walled off. Per The Gamer's reporting, the deadline for UK and Ireland users appears to be June.
Three Ways to Prove You're Old Enough
Sony is offering three verification methods. You can use your mobile number, which checks your age against the information your phone provider has on file. You can upload a photo of a government-issued ID like a passport or driver's licence. Or you can take a facial scan, which uses age estimation software to guess whether you're an adult. The process is described as a one-time check that takes a few minutes, and you can start it by visiting Sony's verification page directly.
Sony's messaging frames this as a safety initiative. "We are committed to creating safe, age-appropriate experiences for players and families while respecting privacy and giving players and parents meaningful control over their gaming experience," the notification reads. And look, protecting kids online is a legitimate goal. Discord and Roblox have both moved in this direction, with Roblox in particular facing serious child safety scrutiny that forced its hand. Regulatory pressure from laws like the UK's Online Safety Act is only accelerating the trend.
But the trade-off here is real, and I don't think Sony should get a pass just because other platforms did it first. Handing over a passport photo or a biometric face scan to use party chat on a console you already bought is a significant ask. At least one user on social media has already reported errors during the verification process, which doesn't inspire confidence in a system that's supposed to be frictionless. Data security concerns around storing this kind of personal information are valid, and Sony's track record on that front isn't spotless.
The framing of "you can still play games and buy things from the Store" as some kind of concession is also worth pushing back on. Voice chat and messaging aren't bonus features. They're how millions of people actually use their PlayStation every day. Stripping them away unless you submit identification treats a core part of the console experience as a privilege rather than a baseline.
Sony says players can select "Verify Age Later" and continue without verifying for now, but the company recommends completing the process early to avoid interruptions. Given that the UK and Ireland rollout is already live with a reported June deadline, players in those regions who rely on party chat for their nightly sessions should probably not wait.
