A Bowl Cut? Persona 6's Leaked Protagonist Stuns Fans
Leaked concept art for Persona 6 has revealed the protagonist's design, and that blonde bowl cut is doing a lot of heavy lifting in the discourse right now.
September 2027. That's the apparent release window for Persona 6, according to a batch of concept art that leaked online yesterday ahead of Summer Game Fest. But nobody's talking about the date. They're talking about the hair.
The protagonist, confirmed by a SEGA Atlus insider to be legitimate, is a boy with a blonde bowl cut. Not a slick phantom thief aesthetic. Not brooding silver hair. A bowl cut. The reaction has been, predictably, volcanic. As we covered yesterday when the outsourcing studio leak first broke, these images appear to come from a separate, second leak that included full concept art and additional character details. The game is reportedly set in Yokohama, and its release date is penciled in for September 2027.
The Design That Split a Fanbase
One detail that's already generating confusion: a previous leak suggested Persona 6 would feature dual protagonists, but leaker lolilolailo has clarified that there's only one playable lead. The girl shown in the concept art is reportedly a side character, not a co-protagonist. That distinction matters for a series where the player character's design becomes iconic. Joker's mask, Makoto's headphones, Yu's grey jacket; these silhouettes are burned into the identity of each game. A bowl cut is a bold swing.
I'll be honest, I think the outrage is running way ahead of the actual problem. Persona protagonists have always had intentionally understated civilian designs. Yu Narukami looked like a mannequin in a school uniform. Joker was deliberately plain-looking outside of the Metaverse, because the contrast with his Phantom Thief persona was the entire point. If Persona 6 follows the same logic, this bowl-cut kid could look completely different in whatever the game's supernatural context turns out to be. Comment sections on My Nintendo News are already at war over it, with some fans calling the design "objectively awful" and others pointing out that every single Persona protagonist gets this exact reaction before the game launches.
The art style itself is noticeably different from Shigenori Soejima's signature look, which defined Persona 3 through 5. Multiple fans have flagged that the leaked art doesn't match his style, with comparisons ranging from Devilman Crybaby to Wind Breaker. Whether Soejima is still involved or has moved on fully to the Metaphor: ReFantazio side of Atlus is an open question, and one that could matter more than any haircut.
A September 2027 window puts the official reveal almost certainly at Summer Game Fest in a few weeks, which lines up with the timing of these leaks. Atlus hasn't commented publicly on any of the leaked material. If the reveal trailer is strong enough, the bowl cut discourse will evaporate overnight. If it isn't, this becomes the first impression that sticks. Persona has earned enough goodwill over the last decade that I'm inclined to wait for the actual reveal before writing the design off, but Atlus is now walking into that showcase with a fanbase that's already arguing instead of speculating. That's a harder room to play to.
