Persona 4 Revival Rewrites Its Most Homophobic Character
Producer Kazuhisa Wada says Yosuke's insensitivity toward outsiders has been lightened for the remake, with most of the game's script changes focused squarely on the protagonist's right-hand man.

Yosuke Hanamura has always been the weak link in Persona 4's otherwise strong party dynamic. He's the protagonist's best friend, but he's also the guy who spends half the game mocking Kanji Tatsumi's implied sexuality and leering at every woman in the cast. Atlus is finally doing something about it.
In an interview with Anime Corner, Persona 4 Revival general producer Kazuhisa Wada confirmed that the remake will alter how Yosuke is written. Wada stressed that the core story and characters remain intact, but acknowledged that Yosuke specifically needed work:
"He's a little bit insensitive in terms of how he treats outsiders sometimes. So we wanted to lighten that up and make it a little bit more fitting for the world we live in now."
Wada added that the team hasn't "really changed anything about the story or the character's thoughts or how they act," and that the adjustments are "mostly Yosuke, really." Players have already spotted at least one altered line in gameplay trailers: a suggestive quip about the protagonist being "good with his hands" has been rewritten to something closer to the original Japanese script.
This isn't Atlus breaking new ground for itself. Persona 3 Reload removed transphobic dialogue from a recurring NPC encounter, and Persona 5 Royal quietly edited out homophobic scenes that appeared in the base game. In both cases, the changes were minor and the games were better for them. Yosuke's situation is more central, though. His hostility toward Kanji isn't a throwaway gag from a side character; it runs through dozens of hours of main party interactions, and it made him unpleasant to spend time with. Trimming the cruelty without gutting his arc as an immature kid who slowly grows up is a harder needle to thread.
I think this is the right call, and I'm glad Wada was direct about naming the problem rather than hiding behind vague "localization adjustments" language. The real test will be whether Atlus actually addresses the pattern of behavior or just files down a few of the worst lines and calls it done. Persona 4 Revival launches on 18th February on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
