A 20-Year Fan Theory Is Now Mario Canon Thanks to Miyamoto

A fan theory dating back to Super Mario Galaxy's 2007 launch is now officially part of the Mario universe, and Miyamoto wants it to stay that way.

For nearly two decades, fans have speculated that Princess Peach and Rosalina are related. The resemblance was too strong, the hints in Super Mario Galaxy's 2007 storybook sequences too suggestive to ignore. Now, Shigeru Miyamoto has confirmed that The Super Mario Galaxy Movie's reveal of the two as sisters isn't just a film-only plot point; he wants future Mario games to treat it as canon.

In a group interview with Nintendo Dream, translated by Nintendo Everything, Miyamoto explained his reasoning. "Before making this movie, I hadn't decided on the character's backstory, but now that I'm making the movie, it's become fun to expand on the character in various ways," he said. "Therefore, I would like to adhere as much as possible to the settings created in the movie in future games." He acknowledged that he's historically avoided locking down character backstories because they become constraints on game design, but the movie-making process apparently changed his perspective.

I love that a fan theory born on mid-2000s forums is now shaping the direction of one of gaming's biggest franchises. What's fascinating about Miyamoto's stance is how it inverts his usual philosophy. This is the same designer who has spent decades treating story as secondary to gameplay, who famously resisted making movies precisely because he didn't want narrative baggage tying his hands. Now he's actively choosing to import movie lore back into the games. Whether that enriches future Mario titles or just adds continuity obligations to a series that has thrived without them is an open question, but at minimum, it gives Rosalina's next game appearance a lot more weight.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie itself has grossed nearly $756 million worldwide despite sitting at a 49 percent critic score on Rotten Tomatoes, and it hasn't even opened in Japan yet. The franchise has now surpassed $2 billion at the global box office. Say what you will about the film's quality, but when your movie prints money like that, the lore it establishes has real staying power.
