Modern Warfare 4 Beta Weekend One: The Numbers and the Fixes

Weekend one of the Modern Warfare 4 beta ends at 6pm BST on Tuesday 25 August: level 20 is the ceiling and only cosmetic rewards carry over. Weekend two opens on Friday 28 August, free for everyone, including Switch 2.

The first Modern Warfare 4 beta weekend closes at 6pm UK time on Tuesday 25 August, and it ends in a stranger place than the raw player counts suggest. The Steam numbers sit well below the previous record yet above last year's Call of Duty beta. Players complained about spawns and time-to-kill on day one, and Infinity Ward's own patch notes were addressing spawns directly by the beta's third day. On Friday 28 August the whole picture resets, because the open beta is free to everyone and Switch 2 finally joins.

If you are playing this weekend, the practical facts are these: the level 20 cap is where your account stops until Friday, five of the eight beta rewards are earnable now, and only cosmetics survive into the full game. Everything past level 20 waits for weekend two.

Weekend one by the Steam numbers

This first session is gated: pre-order or pre-purchase, or a redeemed beta code, on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. That limits reach by design, which is worth holding in mind before judging the figures.

On Steam, the beta peaked at 115,145 concurrent players, per SteamDB figures collated by Eurogamer. The beta ships as a separate install outside the main Call of Duty app, which makes it unusually easy to measure. Peak came on Friday, and daily concurrency dipped on each following day.

BetaPeak Steam concurrents
Modern Warfare 4, Early Access weekend115,145
Black Ops 7 betaaround 100,000
Modern Warfare 2 beta, previous record168,330
Battlefield 6 open beta521,079

Two caveats keep those numbers honest. Eurogamer notes Activision has yet to publish any numbers, so Steam is a partial window rather than a total: Battle.net and Microsoft Store players, and every console player, never appear in these charts. And the comparison set is uneven: a gated early-access weekend against an open beta is not like-for-like, which is exactly what Friday changes. The open portion adds free entry, a Warzone sampler and additional maps and modes, so a larger number is plausible even before word of mouth lands either way.

The feedback that kept coming back

Kotaku's read of the opening weekend found a vocal slice of players unconvinced: poorly allocated spawn points, gunfights ending before they developed, and a presentation deliberately stripped of the series' recent theatrics. That stripping-back was deliberate, the outlet notes: Infinity Ward has spent the past year saying this entry would tone down the series' recent excesses, and some of the coldness reads as players discovering the studio meant it. Visuals and dynamic environmental detail drew praise in the same coverage.

What Activision changed mid-beta

The response landed fast. A Saturday update cut enemy footstep volume and audible range, tuned down lethality on selected weapons, and brightened Transit 213's shadowed areas. "We heard you loud and clear on the footstep volume, so we've adjusted things downward for today," Infinity Ward said in its beta patch notes. Eurogamer's patch breakdown names the two guns hit hardest: the ISO Nightshade SMG and the Oris 8.6 marksman rifle both lost damage range and headshot multiplier.

The same update added the Cachette map and the Inflation mode, where eliminating enemies and defeating HVT operators builds a cash pot and the richest players become marked targets. A fourth map in the pool switched map voting on. PC players got a steadier Secure Attestation Wizard for the login trouble that spoiled part of day one. That update's known-issues list still carried two open problems: join-in-progress switched off on Kill Block, and an FPS drop when cooking certain lethals.

The day-three patch notes took on the loudest complaint directly: "Based on what we're seeing, we need to improve," the notes said of spawns, with refinement of spawn placement and logic described as ongoing across all maps and modes. Attachment penalties came off some optics and underbarrels, incorrectly labelled stat penalties were corrected, and a further new playlist joined the rotation.

What opens on Friday 28 August

Everyone can pre-loadall platforms, including Switch 2Wednesday 26 August, 5pm BST
Open Beta beginsfree, no code, Switch 2 includedFriday 28 August, 6pm BST
Open Beta endsrewards stop being earnableTuesday 1 September, 6pm BST

Activision's support pages confirm weekend two requires no pre-order and no code, on every platform, Switch 2 included. The level cap rises from 20 to 30, which unlocks the last three rewards: the Field Tested spray at 23, the Beta Rights loading screen at 26 and the Beta Forged blueprint for the ISO Nightshade SMG at 30, per the beta intel post. None of them can be earned after the beta closes.

Two bigger additions ride along. Call of Duty: Warzone joins the beta with Resurgence on Zodiac, a new map, per PlayStation Blog. And anyone who played weekend one downloads once and keeps both install and progression into weekend two.

What carries over and what does not

Cosmetic rewards unlocked in the beta transfer to the full game on 23 October. Rank, weapon unlocks and other progression do not, as our beta access guide sets out from the official FAQ. The practical consequence: the eight-reward list is finishable only across both weekends, and the clock on it runs out at 6pm BST on Tuesday 1 September.

The beta also carries Entrenched, a playable campaign mission, a series first for a Call of Duty beta. That is a slice of the campaign, not the early access window for the full campaign, which arrives on 16 October and is covered separately.

Whether the open gate lifts the Steam peak toward Modern Warfare 2's 168,330, or leaves the gap to Battlefield 6's 521,079 looking like the real story of the season, will be measurable within a week. The spawn rework has no announced completion date, only Activision's word that the work is ongoing.
