It's a carefully worded line. He's been on EA's football game before, of course, but never under the EA Sports FC name. The distinction matters to EA, and it clearly matters to Mbappé too. Four years after his last cover appearance during the FIFA era, the French forward is back as the face of EA Sports FC 27's Ultimate Edition.

Why Now?

The reveal didn't arrive in a vacuum. It dropped days after the 2026 FIFA World Cup final, where Spain beat Argentina in extra time to claim the trophy for the second time in the nation's history. Mbappé's France didn't lift the cup, but his individual form over the past two seasons at Real Madrid made the choice straightforward. He finished as LaLiga's top scorer in both of his first two seasons at the club and claimed the 2025/26 UEFA Champions League Golden Boot with 15 goals. Add a strong World Cup showing on top, and the marketing case writes itself.

I think the interesting wrinkle here is that EA had a genuine decision to make. Spain just won the World Cup, and EA Sports FC's own simulation correctly predicted that outcome for the fifth consecutive tournament. Lamine Yamal, Rodri, Pedri; any of those players could have fronted the box. Going with Mbappé instead signals that EA values global star power over tournament narrative, and given Mbappé's commercial reach, that's probably the right call from a business standpoint. Whether it's the more exciting choice is another matter.

Spain Gets the Cards, Mbappé Gets the Cover

While Mbappé headlines the box, Spain's World Cup winners are getting their own celebration inside the game. EA Sports FC 26 is rolling out a World Cup Winners promo in Ultimate Team, featuring 16 boosted cards for Spain's squad. As reported by Destructoid, the lineup includes 98-rated Yamal, 97-rated Rodri, and a stacked midfield featuring Pedri, Fabián Ruiz, and Baena. Every card in the set launches with 5 PlayStyles+, which in the current Ultimate Team meta makes them absurdly powerful. The only card not available in packs is goalkeeper Unai Simón.

EA hasn't confirmed an exact release time, but tournament winner promos have historically dropped 48 hours after the final. If that pattern holds, the cards should already be live or arriving imminently.

It's a smart bit of parallel marketing: celebrate the actual champions in the current game while using the cover reveal to pivot attention toward FC 27. EA has done this dance before, and they're good at it.

The cover reveal also kicks off what EA is calling a full week of FC 27 announcements. The first gameplay trailer premieres on July 23rd, which should give us a proper look at whatever mechanical changes EA has made this year. Career Mode, Ultimate Team, and Clubs are all expected to return, though specifics on new features are still under wraps.

FC 26 was well received last year. TheXboxHub awarded it a 4.5 out of 5, praising its Authentic mode and incremental improvements to Ultimate Team and Clubs. The bar is set, and EA will need more than a famous face on the cover to clear it again.

Mbappé's return feels like a safe pick rather than a bold one, but safe picks sell millions of copies. I'm more curious about what that July 23rd trailer shows us.
