Did NetEase Already Nerf Captain America's Bulge?
Captain America's new Seaside Sentinel skin broke the internet with its generous proportions. Days later, players are convinced NetEase quietly dialled things back.

Steve Rogers has been packing heat since July 1, and I don't mean the shield. Captain America's new Seaside Sentinel skin in Marvel Rivals dropped at the start of the month as part of a summer swimsuit batch alongside Loki and White Fox, but it was Cap's red, white, and blue singlet that dominated every timeline. The bulge was so pronounced it clipped through his chair during emotes. Jiggle physics were involved. People thought it was a mod.
Then, right around the Fourth of July, players started noticing something felt... Different. Smaller, maybe. The debate over whether NetEase stealth-patched America's most patriotic asset has become one of the funniest discourse cycles Marvel Rivals has ever produced.
The skin itself is modelled after the 1992 Marvel Swimsuit Special, illustrated by Joe Phillips and Karl Story, where Cap rocks a nearly identical look. As Marvel Rivals posted on X, the in-game description reads: "The beach crew voted Captain America should man the grill, just like the red, white, and blue-blooded specimen of American masculinity people believe he is. Unfortunately, his skills on the grill were not nearly as calculated as his shield throws." Rob Liefeld, the artist whose exaggerated anatomy Cap's proportions seem to channel, posted his approval on X: "I LOVE it!"
But by July 4, the conversation shifted from celebration to forensic analysis. Players were side-by-side comparing screenshots, convinced the bulge had been reduced. One Reddit user went further than most, posting that they had extracted the model files directly. "There is no changes directly to the model or rigging from what I can see," they wrote. "It's possible they fixed the bulge to parent it to his Pelvis which would fix the stretch down." In other words, the geometry might be the same, but the way the mesh deforms during animations could have been adjusted, producing a less dramatic silhouette without technically altering the model. Another commenter replied that this was "incredibly unemployed behavior." Fair.
The Gooner Game Paradox
This whole saga sits inside a running tension NetEase has never quite resolved. The studio has publicly said Marvel Rivals is not intended to be overtly sexual, yet the developers have also said they appreciate the "gooner game" label the community has given it. You can't have it both ways forever. Invisible Woman's launch skin, Squirrel Girl's design, and now a Captain America skin with independent crotch physics all tell the same story: NetEase knows exactly what it's doing, and it drives engagement every single time.
I think the funniest possible outcome here is that nothing actually changed. That the perceived shrinkage is just a difference in camera angle, lighting, or which emote you're watching, and thousands of people spent their Fourth of July running comparative bulge analysis on a free-to-play hero shooter. If NetEase did quietly adjust the rigging, though, that's a weirdly cowardly move. You shipped the skin. You got the viral moment. Own it.
The Seaside Sentinel skin is available in the Marvel Rivals store until July 31. Other heroes who received swimsuit skins include Daredevil and Black Widow. Marvel Rivals is available on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2.
