HoMM Olden Era Broke Even Day One, Now Tops 1M Sold
Unfrozen's early access strategy hit recouped development costs within 24 hours and has now crossed a million units, with a full roadmap laying out what's next.
A quarter of a million copies on day one. One million in under a month. Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era hasn't just had a strong early access launch; it's had the kind of commercial run that most fully released games would kill for.
Developer Unfrozen confirmed the milestone on Twitter, calling the first four weeks a "lovely start" and noting the team has been "extremely happy" working with player feedback. A press release accompanying the roadmap announcement confirmed the one million figure and reiterated that the game broke even on development costs in a single day. For a turn-based strategy game built on the bones of a 1999 classic, launching into early access alongside a day-one PC Game Pass release, those numbers are staggering. I didn't expect a HoMM revival to land this hard.
Alongside the sales news, Unfrozen laid out a multi-stage roadmap. Q3 2026 brings a hero skill rebalance, an emote wheel, improvements to the Random Map Generator, and a teamplay mode for co-op against AI. Q4 follows with matchmaking reworks, Elite class changes, Observer Mode, and replays. Further out, the studio is planning underground terrain, new PvP win conditions, Ironman mode for the campaign, and map editor improvements. The full 1.0 release will add the campaign's second and third acts, map sharing, and a PvE roguelike mode that Unfrozen says it will detail later.
The roguelike addition is the most intriguing item on the list. HoMM's core loop of exploring, building armies, and managing resources already has the procedural DNA that roguelikes thrive on, and grafting that structure onto this formula could give the game serious long-term legs beyond its competitive multiplayer. Unfrozen has been smart about not reinventing what works, and leaning into a modern mode like this shows they understand where the genre has moved since 1999.
The roadmap does carry the usual caveat that "contents are subject to revisions as the game evolves," but with a million players already invested and a 90% positive rating on Steam, Unfrozen has both the funding and the goodwill to take its time. Ubisoft remains on board as co-publisher alongside Hooded Horse.
