Helldivers 2's Long-Awaited Warhammer Crossover Is Real

After more than a year of hints, failed scheduling, and one CEO's very expensive Warhammer miniature habit, the Helldivers 2 x Warhammer 40,000 crossover is officially happening.

Last year, Arrowhead CEO Shams Jorjani admitted publicly that Games Workshop "would love a crossover" with Helldivers 2, but that actually pulling it off had proven difficult between other development priorities. Creative lead Johan Pilestedt, meanwhile, kept showing up on social media surrounded by what appears to be a small fortune in Warhammer miniatures. The desire was clearly there. The timing just never worked out.

Today, at Warhammer Skulls 2026, Arrowhead finally made it official: a Warhammer 40,000 Legendary Warbond is coming to Helldivers 2.

Game director Mikael Eriksson shared the announcement, noting that Arrowhead is "full of Warhammer nerds" and that the studio is "beyond thrilled to see this Legendary Warbond come to life." The reveal came as part of the broader Warhammer Skulls showcase, which also featured announcements for Warhammer 40,000: Chaos Gate - Deathwatch, Boltgun 2, and a mobile Boltgun spin-off.

I've been waiting for this one. The elevator pitch practically writes itself: Helldivers 2 is already a game about expendable soldiers dying gloriously to liberate the galaxy from alien threats through absurd levels of violence. Warhammer 40,000 is a universe where that exact premise has been the core fantasy for decades. The tonal overlap is so obvious it almost feels like it should have happened at launch.

What's Actually In It?

Not much has been revealed yet, and that's the one frustrating part. The announcement trailer mixes standard Helldivers 2 gameplay footage with real-world Warhammer miniature detailing, which looks cool but tells us almost nothing about what players will actually unlock. Previous Legendary Warbonds have included themed weapons, armor sets, cosmetics, and sometimes vehicles, so some combination of those seems like a safe bet. I'd personally lose my mind over some kind of Space Marine power armor adapted into a Helldiver exo suit, pauldrons and all, but that's just wishful thinking until Arrowhead shows its hand.

Arrowhead says it will reveal more details on the Warbond later this year. No release date has been given beyond "coming soon."

The timing of this announcement is interesting for another reason. Arrowhead also revealed today that it's partnering with Nixxes, PlayStation's PC port studio, on a major performance update arriving May 27. That update targets stability, latency reduction, and upscaling tech across all platforms, including FSR 3.1 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, PSSR 1 on PS5 Pro, and various PC-specific solutions. Arrowhead is calling it "just the opening salvo in an ongoing campaign to improve performance," with a dedicated tech-focused update planned for later this summer.

Players have been vocal about Helldivers 2's performance issues for over a year now, and Pilestedt addressed the frustration directly in a recent Reddit AMA where he promised clearer, more frequent communication. Bringing in Nixxes, the studio behind strong PC ports of Marvel's Spider-Man and Ghost of Tsushima, is a concrete step that carries more weight than another promise alone.

So Arrowhead is essentially running a two-front campaign right now: fix the technical foundation while dropping the kind of crossover content that keeps players excited. I think the Warhammer Warbond announcement is smart timing. It gives the community something to look forward to while the less glamorous but equally important performance work happens in the background. Whether the Warbond itself delivers on the potential of the crossover depends entirely on what's inside it, and Arrowhead hasn't earned the benefit of the doubt on every front. But as a pairing of two universes, this one was always going to work. The question was never if it made sense; it was whether Arrowhead could get it done.

Nixxes' involvement in the performance push, combined with a summer tech update on the roadmap, suggests Arrowhead is finally treating the game's technical debt as a priority rather than something to patch around. The Warbond gets the headlines, but that May 27 update might matter more to the players who've been grinding through frame drops and crashes since 2024.
