FF7 Revelation Director Takes the Stage at Gamescom

Naoki Hamaguchi isn't just sending a trailer. The FF7 Revelation director is heading to Gamescom's Opening Night Live to personally show off the trilogy's grand finale.

"We're serious about concluding the series with Final Fantasy 7 Revelation, and we're proceeding with development with that goal in mind."

That was director Naoki Hamaguchi speaking to Automaton recently about the final chapter of the FF7 Remake trilogy. Now he's putting his money where his mouth is. Square Enix has confirmed that Hamaguchi will personally present "a new look" at Final Fantasy 7 Revelation during Gamescom's Opening Night Live on August 25 at 7pm BST.

The announcement came via the official Final Fantasy VII account on X, and the phrasing matters here. Square Enix didn't say "watch a new trailer." They said Hamaguchi would be involved in the segment. When a director flies out to a stage show, you don't get 90 seconds of pre-rendered footage and a logo card. You get a gameplay demo, a release date, or both. I'd be surprised if this is anything less than a proper deep dive, and given that the game is targeting the first half of 2027 without a firm date yet, a concrete launch window feels overdue.

Hamaguchi on DLC and endings

The director's Automaton interview also tackled the DLC question head-on, after dataminers found a "Story Expansion Pass" listed on the Epic Games Store last month. Hamaguchi was direct about what that would and wouldn't mean:

"The story will be concluded within the main game. If we were to hypothetically release any DLC, we would likely want to create a kind of spin-off focused on a specific character that depicts their untold stories, kind of like what we did with Yuffie with Final Fantasy 7 Episode Intermission, and I think there is demand for it among fans."

So the main story wraps in the base game, full stop. Any DLC would be a side story, not a bolted-on epilogue. After the way Rebirth handled its ending, with layers of ambiguity that split the fanbase clean down the middle, that's a promise Hamaguchi can't afford to break. I respect the clarity. Too many studios leave the door open for post-launch story content that makes the original ending feel incomplete; Hamaguchi is drawing a line before the game even ships.

Revelation is also breaking from the trilogy's exclusivity pattern. Unlike Remake and Rebirth, which launched as timed PlayStation console exclusives, the third game will release simultaneously on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC. That's a significant shift for a series that spent years locked behind console deals, and it means the Gamescom audience is relevant to every platform holder in the room.

The Remake project has been building momentum since Revelation's reveal at Summer Game Fest earlier this year. Square Enix has said that both Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Rebirth have been selling "several times better" than expected in the wake of that announcement, a rising tide that suggests the trilogy's conclusion could be one of the biggest launches of 2027.

Hamaguchi stepping onto that Gamescom stage personally tells you where Square Enix's confidence sits right now. This isn't a mid-tier update buried in a sizzle reel. Gamescom Opening Night Live airs on August 25 at 11am PT / 2pm ET / 7pm BST.
