
FF7 Remake's Most Annoying NPC Survives to Part 3
Naoki Hamaguchi has confirmed that Chadley, the FF7 Remake trilogy's most polarising NPC, will return with an expanded role in Part 3. The internet's reaction is exactly what you'd expect.
Nobody asked for more Chadley. That hasn't stopped Square Enix from giving us more Chadley.
In an interview with Restart.Run, FF7 Remake trilogy director Naoki Hamaguchi confirmed that Shinra's favourite materia researcher will return in the series' final instalment, and not just as window dressing. "Chadley will continue to play an important role even in the final installment of the trilogy," Hamaguchi said, adding that the character's "strong curiosity and tendency to talk a bit too much" will be "further explored" in Part 3. He even asked players to "warmly follow how Chadley becomes involved in the story."
Warmly. That's doing a lot of heavy lifting for a character the internet has spent six years roasting.
The NPC Nobody Can Escape
Here's the contradiction at the heart of Chadley's existence: he's simultaneously one of the Remake trilogy's most disliked characters and one of its most structurally important. In the original Remake, he was your combat data vendor and optional battle provider. In Intergrade, he became a Fort Condor grandmaster who played dirty. By Rebirth, he'd evolved into a Queen's Blood card shark lurking behind every corner. Every mini-game system Square Enix bolts onto these games seems to flow through this one white-haired lab assistant, and that pattern is almost certainly continuing into Part 3.
Hamaguchi was also asked whether Chadley could become playable. His answer was a diplomatic non-answer: "something we're unable to comment on at this time." I'd bet against it, but the fact that the question was even posed tells you how central the character has become to the trilogy's identity, even if that centrality is precisely what annoys people.
What I find interesting is the tension between Hamaguchi's framing and the actual player experience. He describes Chadley as someone with endearing quirks, a character who's "self-conscious" about talking too much. Players describe him as the guy who won't stop interrupting you with tutorials and dialogue you can't skip fast enough. Both things are true. Square Enix clearly sees Chadley as comic relief with hidden depth; a significant chunk of the fanbase sees him as an obstacle between them and the next story beat. The trophy list for Rebirth already demanded players engage with every piece of side content the game offered, and Chadley was the gatekeeper for much of it.
There is a subplot underneath all the irritation, though. Without spoiling it, Chadley's origins tie into some of the Remake trilogy's bigger themes about identity and autonomy. If Part 3 actually pays that off in a meaningful way, the years of "Hello, Cloud!" interruptions might retroactively feel earned. That's a big if.
Hamaguchi has been increasingly open about Part 3 in recent weeks. He's mentioned completing over 40 full playthroughs, confirmed the game won't compromise on visuals despite going multiplatform, and stated that it does have a title, though Square Enix isn't sharing it yet. He also acknowledged in the same Restart.Run interview that Rebirth's trophy requirements were "a bit excessive," promising better balance for the final game. A Famitsu interview from the same period suggests the project is on schedule. If the cadence of these interviews is any indication, a proper reveal feels close, possibly within the next few months.
When it arrives, Chadley will be right there waiting for you. He always is.
