FF14 May Finally Let New Players Skip Hundreds of Hours

After years of insisting every player experience the full story from A Realm Reborn onward, Square Enix is finally reconsidering. Two potential solutions are in the works, with one possibly arriving alongside the Evercold expansion in January.

For years, Naoki Yoshida's position on Final Fantasy 14's story was clear: every player should experience it from the beginning, no shortcuts. It was a principled stance, and one that made sense when the game had two or three expansions under its belt. But FF14 is now in its 13th year, with a sixth expansion arriving in January, and the hundreds of hours required to reach current content have turned from a selling point into a barrier. Yoshida appears to have finally acknowledged that.

During a media Q&An at Final Fantasy Fan Fest in Berlin, as reported by PC Gamer, Yoshida admitted the team is actively working on solutions to make the game more accessible to newcomers. His exact framing is telling:

"I had previously said that I want players to enjoy the story, so I would like them to have a fresh experience right from A Realm Reborn. But now we are at this point, we've begun thinking about accommodating these kinds of requests."

Two separate approaches are being considered. Yoshida said the first will be implemented before or at Evercold's launch. He was vague on specifics for the second, describing it as a system whose feasibility the development team is still reviewing. "There's a non-zero possibility of us being able to implement it for [patch] 8.0," he said. "So there is a possibility that we could make it."

Why Evercold Changes the Equation

Evercold marks the beginning of the Godless Realms Saga, a fresh narrative arc following the conclusion of the original storyline in 2021's Endwalker. If there was ever a natural entry point for new players, this is it. Square Enix has trimmed main scenario quests over the years, but those cuts have never kept pace with the volume of new content each expansion adds. Paid story skips already exist for individual expansions, but what Yoshida is describing sounds like a free, built-in alternative.

The tension here is real, and it's one the FF14 community has argued about for years. The story is one of the game's greatest strengths. A Realm Reborn's slow opening eventually gives way to Heavensward and Shadowbringers, two of the best narratives in the entire MMO genre. Telling new players to skip all of that feels like handing someone the final book of a series. But telling them they need 300+ hours before they can play with their friends feels equally absurd in 2026.

I think Yoshida is right to move on this, even if it's overdue. The community concern about unprepared players flooding endgame content is valid, but it's a solvable problem. Good tutorials, role-specific training, and gated difficulty can all address mechanical literacy without forcing someone through a decade of quest dialogue. FF14 already has the Hall of the Novice and Trust system; expanding on those frameworks would be far more effective than using story length as a de facto skill gate.

Yoshida hinted that more details on both solutions could come during Tokyo Fan Fest in October. Given how long this debate has simmered, I expect whatever Square Enix announces will be one of the most scrutinised decisions in FF14's history. Getting the balance wrong risks alienating veterans who value the journey. Getting it right could be the single biggest thing Square Enix does to grow FF14's player base before Evercold arrives in January.
