SNK's fighting franchise is having a week: a new DLC fighter drops May 27 and a massive retrospective book is up for pre-order.

Two announcements in the span of a few days paint a picture of a franchise that's firmly back in the conversation. Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves is picking up its second season of DLC with Mr. Karate arriving May 27, and separately, publisher Bitmap Books has announced Fatal Fury: The Ultimate History, a 468-page hardcover chronicling the entire series from its NeoGeo arcade roots to now.

Mr. Karate, for anyone who hasn't followed the lore rabbit hole, is a masked Kyokugen-style fighter whose identity SNK loves to play coy about. SNK's official description calls him "a true tiger unleashed" whose skill surpasses current Kyokugen head Marco Rodrigues. He'll come with his own Arcade Mode storyline and Episodes of South Town content. The character is voiced by River Vitae in English and Go Shinomiya in Japanese, and he'll be available across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, PlayStation 4, and PC via Steam and Epic Games Store.

The book side of things is just as interesting to me. Bitmap Books has built a solid reputation with these oversized retrospectives, and Fatal Fury is a franchise that deserves one. The series helped define competitive fighting games in the early '90s but spent years overshadowed by its sibling, The King of Fighters. A 468-page deep dive with developer interviews feels like long-overdue recognition. The standard edition runs $48, while a Collector's Edition with an interactive cover goes for $77. Both include a free PDF download.

City of the Wolves launching to a healthy reception and now getting steady DLC support, combined with a prestige art book, tells you SNK sees Fatal Fury as more than a nostalgia play. For a franchise that was dormant for over two decades before its comeback, that kind of investment says a lot about where SNK thinks the series is headed.
