8 Months Later, Digimon Time Stranger Ditches Its 30fps Cap

Bandai Namco's creature-taming RPG finally delivers the 60fps mode PS5 players were promised at launch, timed with the game's Switch 2 debut tomorrow.

When Digimon Story Time Stranger launched on PS5 last November, it shipped locked at 30 frames per second with a promise that a performance mode would come later. Eight months is a long time to wait for a feature that should have been there on day one, but as of today, Bandai Namco has pushed out the update across all existing platforms. PS5 players can now toggle between Quality Mode (4K, HDR, up to 30fps) and Performance Mode (Full HD, up to 60fps).

The update isn't arriving in isolation. It's timed to coincide with Digimon Story Time Stranger's Switch 2 and Switch launch on July 10, where the Switch 2 version ships with both graphics modes built in from the start. That detail stings a little if you're a PS5 owner who's been grinding through 450+ Digimon at half the frame rate for the better part of a year. The Switch 2 version gets it out of the box; PS5 players had to wait for a patch timed to someone else's launch window.

I'm glad the update is here, but let's not pretend this is generous. A 60fps option on PS5 hardware in 2025 shouldn't have required a post-launch promise and an eight-month delay. Media.Vision's RPG isn't a graphical powerhouse. Multiple sources, including Shacknews' hands-on with the Switch 2 port, confirm that Performance Mode holds a stable 60fps at 1080p with minimal drops, mostly during cutscenes. If the Switch 2 can handle it at launch, the PS5 certainly could have.

Beyond the Frame Rate

The version 1.2.1 patch (thanks, RPG Site) bundles more than just the graphics toggle. Here's what else is included:

Added Terriermon Assistant as a playable character. Available through Mode Change from Terriermon. Added a Photo Mode during field exploration. Added a screen to check Digivolution Conditions in the Digifarm.

Terriermon Assistant, complete with lab coat and tie, slots in as a new party option through Mode Change. The Digivolution Conditions screen is a quality-of-life addition that should have existed from the start; previously, figuring out evolution requirements meant either memorizing them or pulling up a wiki. Photo Mode is a nice extra for a game whose Digimon designs range from adorable to completely unhinged.

Bandai Namco also squashed a couple of notable bugs. One fix addresses a progression blocker during the main mission "The God of Speed's Wish," and another resolves an issue where Digifarm training would freeze if your playtime hit the maximum of 999 hours and 59 minutes. If you've somehow hit that cap, I respect your dedication and question your sleep schedule.

One caveat on the Graphics Mode: it's not available everywhere. The Performance/Quality toggle is absent on Nintendo Switch (the original), Xbox Series S, and Steam, according to the official patch notes. Xbox Series S owners are left out, which tracks with the console's lower specs but still feels like an omission Bandai Namco should address more directly than a small asterisk.

For anyone who bounced off Time Stranger because of the 30fps cap, this update removes the biggest technical complaint about an otherwise excellent monster-taming RPG. More than 450 Digimon, deep customization, and a non-linear evolution system that rewards experimentation all play better at double the frame rate. Turn-based combat doesn't demand 60fps the way an action game does, but menu navigation, field exploration, and general responsiveness all benefit. It's a better experience, full stop.

Digimon Story Time Stranger's Switch 2 and Switch versions launch tomorrow, July 10, with a major DLC expansion confirmed for 2027. The version 1.2.1 update is available now on PS5 and Xbox.
