A $20 Soulslike Launches Two Days Before Dawnwalker
ProbablyMonsters' gothic action RPG Crimson Moon launches September 1 at just $19.99, dropping into one of the most stacked release windows of the year with a price tag that dares you to take a chance on it.

Twenty dollars. ProbablyMonsters wants you to know that number before anything else about Crimson Moon, its gothic action RPG launching September 1 on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. The release date trailer opens with the price tag front and centre, and that's a deliberate move. When your game drops two days before The Blood of Dawnwalker and three days before Onimusha: Way of the Sword, you don't compete on hype. You compete on value.
According to a post on the PlayStation Blog, Crimson Moon casts players as a Nephilim, a half-human, half-angel warrior fighting to reclaim the fallen city of Gildenarch from demonic corruption. The structure borrows from the Soulslike playbook but strips away the open-world sprawl. Instead of a 60-hour odyssey, you're running replayable missions through Gildenarch's districts, hunting bounties, tracking down gear, and working toward boss encounters with creatures called the Dead Gods. Between runs, you return to Sanctus Clypeus, a hub where you upgrade weapons, buy consumables, and interact with NPCs like a vampire blacksmith and a veteran Nephilim mentor.
Every mission supports two-player online co-op with dynamic difficulty scaling. You share a communal life pool with your partner, so revives become a tactical decision rather than a free reset. ProbablyMonsters describes three districts, each capped by a world boss, with an "extremely difficult" final boss waiting at the end. It's a tighter loop than most games wearing the Soulslike label, and I think that focus is exactly what gives it a shot at finding an audience.
September's crowded shelf
Here's the reality: September 2026 is brutal. Dawnwalker arrives September 3. Onimusha: Way of the Sword follows on September 4. All three are action games built around melee combat, dark fantasy settings, and character progression. Crimson Moon is the smallest name in that lineup by a wide margin, and ProbablyMonsters clearly knows it.
Game director David Lesperance acknowledged the positioning in a press release: "We've made Crimson Moon an intense action-adventure RPG that's approachable to players. With our gothic-inspired art design, co-op support, and epic metal soundtrack, we've made something truly unique for gamers to experience this September." The $19.99 price point is doing a lot of work in that pitch. A $29.99 Deluxe Edition adds a Ceremonial Armor Set, an Axe of the Gods cosmetic, and access to a post-launch content expansion. Standard Edition owners can upgrade later for $10.
I respect the strategy. Launching at $20 when your direct competitors are full-price releases removes the biggest barrier for curious players. You don't have to choose between Crimson Moon and Dawnwalker; you can grab both for less than the cost of one AAA game. PlayStation players also get an exclusive Sonai Magistrate Armor Set regardless of which edition they buy, and PS5 Pro owners get native PSSR support.
The soundtrack is another angle ProbablyMonsters is leaning into hard. Composer Chris Wilson and music manager Steve Pardo assembled a roster of metal collaborators including the band Health (who contributed to Cyberpunk 2077 and Max Payne 3), Periphery guitarist Misha Mansoor, YouTube creator Jared Dines, and Ice Nine Kills guitarist Ricky Armellino. For a game dripping in gothic horror and heavy metal aesthetics, that lineup fits.
Whether Crimson Moon can carve out space in September depends entirely on execution. The co-op focus, mission-based structure, and aggressive pricing give it a distinct identity next to Dawnwalker's open-world ambitions, but ProbablyMonsters is a studio without a shipped title to point to as proof of concept. At $20, though, the ask is low enough that a lot of players won't need convincing. Crimson Moon launches September 1 on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC via Steam and Epic Games Store.
