Blizzard Finally Frees Warcraft 3 From Reforged

Six years after Warcraft 3: Reforged effectively held the original game hostage, Blizzard has quietly made the pre-Reforged client available on Battle.net again.

Six years. That's how long Warcraft 3 fans have been stuck launching a remaster widely regarded as one of the worst in gaming history just to play the original game they already owned. Blizzard has now quietly released Warcraft 3: Legacy as a standalone client on Battle.net, giving players access to the pre-Reforged version 1.29 without touching the Reforged launcher at all. The change was announced last week in a Battle.net forum post with almost no fanfare.

When Reforged launched in 2020, it didn't just disappoint on its own merits. It actively replaced the original Warcraft 3 client, dragging the classic game down with it. Competitive ladders vanished. Player profiles disappeared. Countless custom maps, the thing that kept Warcraft 3 alive for nearly two decades, stopped working. You could toggle classic visuals inside Reforged, but you were still running Reforged, with all of its problems. I can't think of another remaster that made the original game worse by existing, and the fact that it took Blizzard this long to undo that damage is frankly embarrassing.

There's a catch, though. Legacy supports offline and LAN play only; online multiplayer isn't available. Version 1.29 was chosen because it was the last build that supported LAN easily, which makes sense as a priority, but it does mean you're not getting the full Battle.net experience of the original. Players have also reported needing to rename certain folders in the install directory to get cinematics and maps working properly.

I'm glad this exists, but Blizzard treating this like a quiet footnote rather than an actual acknowledgment of what Reforged did to the original game is telling. Warcraft 3 deserved better in 2020, and the fact that a partial restoration in 2026 counts as good news says everything about how badly Reforged botched it.
