AC Shadows' Final DLC Nails What the Base Game Missed
Black Tides wraps up Assassin's Creed Shadows with a three-hour finale that outclasses the base game's storytelling in almost every way, and it couldn't have arrived at a better time.

Three hours. That's all it took for Assassin's Creed Shadows' final DLC, Black Tides, to deliver the story its base game spent dozens of hours failing to land. According to GameSpot's coverage, the expansion's missions, animations, pacing, and structure are all "leaps and bounds ahead" of the main campaign, and the sentiment lines up with what I've been hearing across the board. It's a tie-in to Assassin's Creed Black Flag Resynced, which drops in July for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, and it sounds like exactly the sendoff Shadows needed.
I've been lukewarm on Shadows since launch. The opening act was strong, and Masumi Tsunoda's English voice performance stood out, but the back half of the story never matched that early momentum. So hearing that Black Tides, along with the smaller post-launch expansions that preceded it, actually course-corrected the narrative is encouraging. GameSpot's take was blunt: the DLC's plotline should have been the base game's story all along. That stings a little for anyone who paid full price at launch and got a weaker version of what Ubisoft was clearly capable of, but it also means players jumping in now get a much more complete package.
Black Tides isn't flawless. GameSpot flagged some "extremely annoying boss fights," and a three-hour runtime means it's a coda, not a reinvention. But as a bridge to Black Flag Resynced, it does something Shadows struggled with for months: it makes you care about what comes next. If Ubisoft can carry this level of narrative quality into the remaster, the return to the Caribbean could actually live up to the nostalgia. Shadows stumbling into a strong finish right before Black Flag's relaunch is convenient timing, but I'll take it over the alternative.
