A Dull Bond Is Worse Than a Divisive One, Says IO
IO Interactive's devs argue that a Bond nobody has strong feelings about would be a creative failure, and they're leaning into the backlash around Patrick Gibson's portrayal.
"If we made a Bond where no one had any opinions on them, it would be the dullest Bond ever made." That's senior combat designer Tom Marcham's response to criticism that 007: First Light's younger James Bond comes across as too smug, too cocky, too much smirk and not enough substance. In an interview with Eurogamer, Marcham and narrative director Martin Emborg both framed the polarised reaction to Patrick Gibson's Bond as validation rather than a warning sign.
It's a confident stance, and I think it's the right one. Every single Bond casting in film history has been met with skepticism before the actor won people over. The lopsided grin that's drawn so much heat in trailers is supposed to read as arrogance, as "unearned confidence" in Emborg's words, because this is a young man who hasn't been broken yet. "This guy hasn't seen death in the way that an older Bond has," Emborg said. "When you're a young man, you feel immortal, and he'll definitely learn that he's not." Marcham added that there's rage underneath the bravado, rooted in Bond's orphan backstory, something that doesn't come through in a face-shot but apparently lands in extended gameplay.
What I like about IO's framing here is that they aren't backpedalling or softening the character. They're betting that spending hours with Gibson's performance will change minds, and that's a bet the Hitman studio has earned the right to make. Marcham specifically said Gibson "grows on you throughout the game," and Emborg called him a "larger-than-life" presence with the range to shift between reckless fun and dead seriousness. 007: First Light launches May 27 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
