Exciting news for film lovers in China as the latest Hollywood blockbuster, "Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes," stormed to the top of the mainland box office with an impressive opening weekend tally of $11.4 million.

This marks the fourth weekend in 2024 that a Hollywood film has claimed the number one spot in China, showcasing the enduring appeal of American cinema to Chinese audiences. This victory also comes in the wake of the film's success in North America and international markets, cementing its status as a global hit.

Despite its triumph, "Apes" faced stiff competition from local Chinese films. "The Last Frenzy," a heartwarming comedy revolving around a dying man's final exploits, slipped to second place with earnings of $8.9 million. Likewise, Hong Kong's "Twilight of the Gods: Walled In" continued to draw audiences, raking in $8 million in its second week.

Not to be outdone, Chinese cinema shone with "Formed Police Unit," a gripping tale of Chinese peacekeepers collaborating with the United Nations, earning $3.9 million amidst the Hollywood domination. Japanese anime also made its mark with "Spy x Family Code: White" accumulating $2.4 million since its release.

A special mention goes to the beloved Studio Ghibli classic, "Howl's Moving Castle," making its theatrical debut in China to strong reception, amassing $20 million since its opening.

While Hollywood reigns supreme for now, the diverse offerings from Chinese, Hong Kong, and Japanese cinema demonstrate the rich tapestry of films captivating audiences in China. With the country's total box office earnings hitting $2.92 billion this year, it's clear that China remains a powerhouse in the global film industry.

So, whether you're a fan of action-packed blockbusters, heartwarming comedies, or captivating animations, the Chinese box office has something for every film enthusiast to enjoy.
