In an unexpected turn of events, a piece of gaming history has resurfaced, shedding light on a project that could have significantly altered the landscape of one of the most iconic video game franchises. A two-minute gameplay clip from Neversoft's Call of Duty: 'Future Warfare' has been leaked online, revealing a project that was in development over a decade ago.

Neversoft, a name synonymous with the Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater series and Guitar Hero, once embarked on a journey to create their own Call of Duty title. This project, known as 'Future Warfare' or 'NX1', was a pivot from their previous work and represented a bold new direction for the studio. The gameplay clip, shared by industry veteran Brian Bright on Twitter, showcases an early build from 2011, featuring a mission set on the Moon. This blend of futuristic and traditional 'boots-on-the-ground' combat, along with remastered maps from classic Call of Duty games, hints at what could have been a unique addition to the series.

Founded in 1994, Neversoft became a prominent figure in the gaming world. However, two decades later, it was merged into Infinity Ward by Activision, marking the end of an era. Before this merger, Neversoft was on the path to developing Future Warfare. The leaked footage shows a soldier fleeing an attack on a lunar base, with a mission list and a glimpse of polished gameplay. Brian Bright revealed that this mission was part of Neversoft's learning process with the game engine, experimenting with features like low gravity.

Future Warfare was set to replace COD Ghosts, with Neversoft having developed several campaign missions and multiplayer work. The game would have featured maps like Legacy Afghan, Legacy Crash, and Legacy Terminal, along with unique locations like Bin Laden’s Compound and Gladiator Assault. However, the project was ultimately scrapped, and ironically, Infinity Ward later developed Infinite Warfare in 2016, which bore similarities to Future Warfare.
