Obama Produced Larry David's New HBO Show
June's HBO Max lineup includes a bizarre new original: Larry David starring in a show produced by Barack Obama, premiering June 26.
Of all the streaming announcements buried in June's content avalanche, one stands out as surreal: Barack Obama produced a new HBO series starring Larry David. The show, titled Life, Larry and the Pursuit of Unhappiness, premieres June 26 on HBO Max and has a premise that reads like a bit from Curb Your Enthusiasm that went too far.
The concept, according to HBO's listing: "President and Mrs. Obama want to honour America's 250th anniversary and celebrate the history of the nation on the occasion, but then Larry David calls." I cannot tell if this is going to be brilliant or a complete disaster, and that uncertainty is exactly why I'm watching it on day one. The pairing of Obama's earnest patriotism with Larry David's ability to ruin any social situation feels like it was engineered in a lab specifically for me.
The show lands in a stacked month for HBO Max. House of the Dragon returns for its third season on June 21, Rick and Morty Season 9 episodes start hitting the platform June 15, and My Adventures with Superman kicks off its third season on June 14. HBO is also picking up a fresh batch of A24 films thanks to a renewed streaming rights deal, including Room (2015), Mid90s, and several newer releases hitting streaming for the first time.
June's streaming landscape extends well beyond HBO, too. Netflix is loading up with wedding movies and underdog sports films on June 1, plus Avatar: The Last Airbender Season 2 arrives June 25. Disney+ gets the Avatar: Fire and Ash streaming premiere, a Hamilton 10th anniversary documentary on June 16, and live coverage of the Bonnaroo music festival starting June 11. On the gaming side, Switch 2 owners get Final Fantasy VII Rebirth on June 3 and Star Fox later in the month.
But none of that is as weird as a former president producing a Larry David comedy. If this somehow leads to Obama doing improv with Larry David about the Declaration of Independence, June 2026 will have been worth it for streaming alone.
