Sony just dropped the retro console themes back on PS5, so you can once again deck your dashboard in the vibes of past PlayStation eras -PS2 whoosh sounds, PS3 elegance, and even that PS4 clicky-clack goodness. But here’s the kicker: that iconic PS1 boot-up sequence they added last year? Gone. Vanished. Yeeted into the void.
Players were hyped when the original update landed in 2024, especially since the PS5 has been pretty locked down when it comes to UI customization. It wasn’t just a theme - it was a full-blown nostalgia nuke. You’d power on your PS5 and boom - that vintage PS1 boot sound hit you right in the childhood.
Now? You still get the retro sound effects when switching themes, but the PS1 startup is MIA. Probably because the original was tied to PlayStation’s 30th anniversary, and Sony decided not to keep the party going into 2025.
And while you’re digging around the new update, don’t forget the animated backgrounds for games like Ghost of Tsushima, Demon’s Souls, and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart. It’s small stuff, but it all adds up.
