In the Rust Update 1.98, you can now enjoy the new Tugboats, a new vehicle that allows for customization with items like barbecues and chests. Also, the introduction of Pings allows players to mark up to 5 in-game locations for their team to see. Read the full patch notes below.

Rust Update 1.98 Patch Notes:

Hello Survivors! This patch includes two more new features as well as bug fixes and improvements for the Underwater Labs, maps, Submarines, and more.

ADDED

  • TUGBOATS - A new vehicle that you can place items on, like barbecues, chests, and furnaces! The Tugboat behaves much like the Rowboat or RHIB, but they cannot be purchased from the Fishing Village and must be acquired from the Harbors.
  • PINGS - Equip your Binoculars and add up to 5 in-game markers that your whole team can see (if you are the team leader). These markers will also appear on your compass!

COMMUNITY SERVER CHANGES

  • Player now respawns where they were when they started Spectating. 
  • Team member names are no longer too short in Spectate mode.
  • Fixed a crash that could occur when switching spectated targets while in first person view.
  • Submarines no longer wobble and shake when in Spectate mode.
  • Spectators are now able to see CHIPPY gameplay in Spectate mode. 
  • Player no longer sees flickering effects when observing/spectating CHIPPY players. 
  • Bubble effects can now be seen when in Spectate mode in Submarines.

GAMEPLAY

  • Fixed a bug that let players attach multiple of the same attachment on a weapon affecting its functionality and stats by using Metal Shop Front or Locker.
  • Players can now move properly on wood, stone and metal roof pieces with the Hammer equipped.
  • Auto sprint now applies to Boats and Submarines. 
  • Fixed a kick that could occur when falling from a ledge in a wounded state.
  • Stairs inside the warehouse at the Water Treatment Plant now work as intended.
  • Added Weapon Inspect gestures for the Crossbow and Speargun.
  • Fixed a bug that allowed players to go through terrain/icebergs by playing a foundation on a RHIB or by using External Stone/Wood Gate.
  • Fixed a kick that could occur when turning on broadcasting for Vending Machines.

UI

  • Vending Machines cluster menu now updates after the player toggles broadcasting.
  • Map button UI no longer persists across other tabs after closing the Map with the legend open.
  • Hidden Map controls on the Death Screen no longer appear after looking at a respawn point.
  • Deleting an old marker will no longer snap the map focus to the next most recently placed.
  • The Death Screen map no longer moves erratically when zoomed in.
  • Zoom In/Out speed is now consistent and ties to console framerate.
  • Map marker no longer off screen when zoomed in.
  • Marker snap and election radius is correct size at close zoom levels.
  • Map cursor now focuses on the player’s position whilst wounded and not the cursor.
  • Moonpool icons are no longer missing from the multi-layer map. 
  • Players can now remove Map Markers placed on their death point.
  • Balanced the speed of the Map cursor..
  • UI for players submerged underwater now shows in HUD when submerged by crouching.

VISUAL

  • Certain props no longer float in mid-air in Underwater Labs.
  • NPC models now have the correct eye model. 
  • Player hands now line up correctly when playing CHIPPY.
  • Underwater CCTV displays no longer appear submerged.

OTHER CHANGES

  • Directional audio is now smoothed correctly for Submarine SFX.
  • Correct SFX now plays when switching seats in the Duo Submarine.

KNOWN ISSUES

  • Junkpiles can rarely spawn in water where Tugboats are.
  • Tugboat Information Screen is hard to read at higher FOV.
  • Small Oil Rig monument's name is not displayed on the map.
  • Underwater Labs PvP Killzone does not function properly.
  • FPS drops when looking directly at Tugboat’s wake effect while moving.
  • FPS drops when Tugboats collide around the side-mounted ladder area.
  • Mounting a chair on Tugboats displays the “Change Seat” prompt and will sometimes cause players to die if they then stand up afterwards.
  • Shooting at players on Tugboats when both Tugboats are moving will sometimes register as projectile_los.
  • Removing Sleeping Bags from a cluster then dying may cause the death screen list to move out of bounds.
