There's been some interesting rumours making the rounds about how Bungie was, or is, thinking about funding our favourite looter shooter. Bungie were apparently kicking around the idea of a subscription model for Destiny. Yeah, you read that right – a regular sub to keep playing, on top of everything else.
Now, before everyone grabs their pitchforks, this was reportedly an internal discussion. The idea was to find a more predictable revenue stream, especially after news of financial struggles and those unfortunate layoffs at the studio. Live service games aren't cheap to keep running, and with the pressure on after Lightfall didn't quite hit the mark for everyone, you can see why they might be looking at all options.
Their now-parent company, Sony, apparently wasn't too keen on the idea. It seems Sony prefers the current setup – big expansions, seasonal content, and the good old Eververse store. The thought of adding another recurring payment to Destiny probably makes most players' wallets (and heads) hurt. We already buy the big yearly DLCs, often the deluxe versions with dungeon keys, and then there are season passes.
It’s a tricky spot for Bungie. They need to keep the lights on and the content flowing, but player trust is a huge deal. For now, it looks like a Destiny sub isn't happening, but it definitely gives us something to think about on about the future of how we pay for ongoing games.
