Nintendo Wii U and 3DS Call of Duty Online Shutdown

As of April 8th, Nintendo Wii U and 3DS owners had a disappointing day as all online servers for the consoles were officially shut down. This shutdown means that beloved games like Mario Kart 8 and Splatoon are no longer playable online through official means. However, this also marks the end of an era for two Call of Duty games on the Nintendo platforms - Call of Duty Black Ops 2 and Ghosts.

Released in 2012 and 2013 respectively, Black Ops 2 and Ghosts were the final entries in the Call of Duty series to grace Nintendo consoles. With the closure of the online servers, these games can now only be played offline. Despite the dwindling player base, there were still around 45 players engaging in these titles up until the final moments of the shutdown, as mentioned by U/Calwings on Reddit.

The decision to shut down the servers was a blow to the remaining community, especially since the Wii entries of Call of Duty managed to survive online thanks to private hosting by Activision. Unfortunately, the same fate did not extend to the Wii U games, and players will have to adapt to playing offline or seek alternative ways to enjoy their favorite titles.

However, all hope is not lost for Nintendo fans looking to get back online. A fan-made project known as Pretendo is actively working on creating its own online functionality for both the Wii U and 3DS. While the project currently does not support Call of Duty games, it offers a glimpse of promise for the future revival of online gaming on these platforms.

For those unwilling to wait, other platforms like PC, PlayStation, and Xbox still offer active communities and online play for Call of Duty titles. While the end of an era has arrived for Nintendo Wii U and 3DS players, the gaming community remains resilient in finding ways to keep the spirit of online gaming alive.
