Blizzard Employees Miss Out on Bonuses Amid Overwatch 2 Challenges

Recent reports from Bloomberg's Jason Schreier have shed light on the growing issues surrounding Blizzard and their highly anticipated game, Overwatch 2.

In a recent edition of the Game On Newsletter, Schreier revealed that developers working on Overwatch 2 did not receive the profit-sharing bonus that had been a common practice at Blizzard. This lack of bonus comes as Blizzard implements major changes to their company policies.

According to Schreier, the lack of a profit-sharing bonus for Overwatch 2 developers is a result of a significant policy change that occurred in 2023. Previously, bonuses were based on the overall company performance, but they are now tied to the success of each specific franchise.

While teams working on Diablo and World of Warcraft received their bonuses, the Overwatch team was left without a share. This issue has long been a point of contention within the company, with differing opinions on how bonuses should be distributed.

Former presidents Mike Morhaime and J. Allen Brack advocated for company-wide bonus sharing to encourage innovation and creativity. In contrast, former CEO Bobby Kotick argued that rewards should be given to those working on the most profitable projects.

The change in bonus policy occurred in 2023, before the appointment of CEO Johanna Faries. Faries has expressed interest in reevaluating the existing company policies to address these concerns.

Overwatch 2 faced criticism upon its 2022 launch, with players expressing dissatisfaction over missing features and unfulfilled promises. The game's PvE hero mode, a major selling point, was ultimately canceled. Despite some updates, Blizzard has decided to focus on PvP gameplay, neglecting the PvE content.
